Know this car? (red '95 cab)
#1

I found a nice looking 95 cab at a dealership in Greenville - only 73K miles, but had some tough times. Had 3 owners, and Carfax seems to show 2 accidents w/ a salvage title at one point. I am real hesitant to buy, but might consider it if someone happens to know something good about it (and the price was low enough).

Some carfax highlights:

Corporate fleet vehicle in Chapel Hill, NC 95-98 then Jacksonville, Fl until 2001 (salvage title issued in '98)

In 2001 @ 62K miles, has list of maintenance work done, and among all the standard stuff, "engine replaced" is listed

Late 2001 @ 65K, in a wreck w/ "moderate damage" in Georgia, then sold to someone in Athens, GA

In 2005 @ 72.5K miles, sold to someone in Simpsonville, SC

In 2008 @ 72.9K miles, as taken on a trade in Easley, SC and sold at auction to LandRover in Greenville, SC

Sounds a little fishy, but nice to look at. I miss my old 968 cab, and should have never have sold...

Why don't you buy my 25.9k miles red/black 92 cab? It has 6 speed, limited slip, hi fi sound, headlight washers and the coveted 17 C2 turbo rims. Email me for pix.

why don't you register that thing and drive it? lol - by now the fuel has probably gone bad and it needs an oil change, just from sitting - let it sit too much longer and it could start developing leaks - with the market in the dumper the way it is right now, i'd hang onto it

I'd stay away. i first heard of that car in June of 2003 when the GA owner visited the 968.net site. I added it to the cab registry at that time as have 75K miles, now, 5 years later it has 73K miles????

Seems odd a new car dealer and a Land Rover dealer to boot would buy a car like this at auction for resale.

I asked him about that - apparently they picked it up cheap and felt like just the looks would be a draw to get people to their lot. I don't think he expects to make much money off of it. Still a little strange. Actually the honda dealer in easley,sc that took it on trade actually had it for sale (very briefly) for 9,900...

Sounds like a sweet car, but my guess is that you want a fair amount for it... Not that it would not be worth it, but just can't really justify anything beyond about $12K.

Chip,

It sounds like a POS...hang in and keep your eyes open. Decent cars can be had for $12k...$15k will get you a good car and $20 K will go very far...

You should consider that whatever car you choose will probably cost you $20k in combination of First Cost and deferred maintenance. Better not to buy a salvage, wrecked car if you can avoid it, or know every detail...

Regards,

Jay

i on the other had am not so quick to throw the baby out with the bath water - the car looks pretty darned good, especially for that price - fresh tires, what looks like fresh brakes - clean carpet - new top - body looks good

i don't personally car about salvage, as long as the frame is straight, and i don't plan to sell the car - salvage title by itself does not necessarily have anything to do with driveability - it only affects resale

i do care about wrecks, but that is lessened by good work having been done, and again, as long as the frame is straight

if you are budget limited like that, i would go take a look at it, drive it (looking for any pulling, etc) and then talk to them about allowing you to take it to a frame shop of your choice for inspection
