International Shipments?
#1

Anybody have any experience with international shipping?

A fellow forum member and I are looking to swap some parts... problem is I'm in the US and he's in the UK. The parts are all oversized (not heavy, just large in one basic dimension).

The shipping estimates I am finding (especially from FedEx) are insane.

My company does a ton of internal shipping so I know I can get reliable estimates via my workplace, but I am looking for any suggestions others may have.

I am heading to the post office at lunch to see if they can do it- according to their website, my package is too big for them to handle... <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/blink.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/biggrin.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

the last time i shipped a splitter, it was 60 bucks via fedex, but gert took care of it, so i suspect he had screaming good rates

i would call pete and see what he does - he ships there quite a bit - there are a lot of guys overseas running his stuff - he might have tips on rates and ins and outs of customs

I live in Canada and just bought a complete exhaust system from RS Barn in Pennsylvania. Pete arranged it all at his end. No problems at all other than a bit of a hold-up at customs because I used my business address for shipment (I don't have home delivery) and they thought I needed a customs broker. Once I told them that it was personal goods just shipped to the office for convenience the parts arrived one day later. I only had to pay the taxes owing.

Thanks!

Will talk to Pete to see what to do. I know it should cost less, but I am not too keen on how to do it.

I've found usps to have some of the best rates, however, when they get to the uk, they're taken over by parcel force, which is one of the most incompetent companies I have ever deal with. I've sent several things USPS 3-5 day shipping to the uk that have taken over 3 months to get there. This has been a reoccurring problem as well.

Well that kinda stinks!

I am pretty sure I can get a reasonable rate, as can my potential swap partner, but I don't know if the chance of a three month delay due to misplacement or whatever is going to make me happy. I definitely do not want these parts to get lost.... As my parts are expensive (yet still available from one source) and his parts are NLA!

I'm a little bummed right now.

Anyone going to the UK in the near future?!

I have had good luck and pretty good prices with USPS. You can look up quote online. Even though USPS doesn't have tracking per say, if you add insurance (cheap) you can use customs form number to see when package was dropped off, when it leaves country, when it arrives in destination country and if it is at customs, and when attempted delivery (sometimes) and delivered date. Usually 5-10days in transit. Then most delays are from customs or other carrier.

Even with all this, packages pretty much are received in two weeks from shippment
