intermitent overheating

My 93 model coupe has started overheating on occasion. Took to my "guy" who diagnosed no coolant flow and a stuck thermostat which was replaced. Seemed fine but now, 2 weeks later, it over heated again today (leaving the unhappy wife worried). She reports a "clicking noise" from the right front yesterday but no overheating at that time. Same noise today accompanied by overheating. Ideas???

Is your coolant level the same? If so, I would suspect the new thermostat.

Also, how high is the needle climbing? I noticed a change in my cars gauge as well but temps in the DC area have been brutal. Yesterday was 100 degrees, code orange air quality. Those kinda temps effect the cars ability to cool itself. My needle rose about 2 needle marks above the first lower marker. Typically it sits one needle below that 1st marker once it gets warmed up.

They probably did not thoroughly bleed it. Very common. Make sure car is fully warmed up, heater temp on high, fan on. Then crack the bleed screw until no bubbles come out.

Note: some shops stick a normal screw in there when they lose the bleed screw. It will never bleed out like that.

Thanks guys. There appears to be no loss of coolant, coolant looks fine, oil looks fine, no white smoke. Guage goes to the top and wife reports the warning light came on this morning when it happend, as it did the last time this happened to her. Running the defrost on at full hot (in 90 degree heat) got her home after it cooled down, but the needle was headed to the top, just more slowly. I'll check with my shop about the bleeding issue. Any other ideas?

One other thought I had was that the new water pump they just put in at 98000 miles could be the culprit, but how would that explain the intermitent nature of the problem???

after verifying the bleeding, i would move on to a control issue - intermittent issues are often electrical - could be the fan temp switch - verify that the fans come on low speed just above the first white line, and then high when it gets closer to the upper white line
