Injector cleaning
#1

Folks: I routinely use  Redline injector cleaner added to the gas of my 968 Cab. In my other vehicles (Subarus), I periodically clean the injectors by disabling the fuel pump, disconnecting the fuel line and connecting a cleaner directly into the fuel line. The car runs on the cleaner until the aerosol can is empty.   I am thinking of doing this on the 968.

Has anyone done this? Which line is the fuel in (as opposed to the return line). Any help would be appreciated.

you might be able to do that on a low compression engine, but i would not try it on a high compression engine.  if the octane rating is not high enough, it can detonate, even at idle.  also, the 968 fuel pump is a high pressure pump.  i doubt you could get enough pressure out of a can.

i am not a fan of "wonder goos", though i have certainly tried my share, including injector cleaners like this.  things like this may work ok as a preventative measure (though a good gasoline with techron or some other similar cleaning agent will work just as well), but nothing is going to be as good as a professional cleaning, which would include balancing flow.

in my opinion, things like that cleaner are a waste of money.  it's the male version of "magic wrinkle cream".  it's designed to make you feel like you're doing something, but really does not produce results.

My former mechanic , RIP , ( RETIRED In Peace .. :-) always stood by his steadfast belief that additives and similar cleaning or enhancing agents , whether for gas, or oil, or transmission fluids, or gaskets and seals conditioners, or coolant ( with the sole exception of water wetter, for some reason ..). are not just completely useless / snake oil , but many can end up harming your engine as well ..in the long run. I'm not saying I agree with him completely, but after a 40 year stint working on Porsches , BMWs , Audis, VWs and MBZs, he must know a few things .

On the other hand, he could have been discouraging the use of additives so he ends up with the repair jobs , his customers might have been able to avoid or delay , by using those solutions ?! LOL, now I don't know what to believe.

every once in a blue moon you find something that works, but then they get rid of it.  steam premium was a great external engine cleaner.  then it became unavailable.  a run rite treatment used to be a good thing to do.  i was stunned at how much cleaning it actually did, and the results it had.  then, of course, it became impossible to source.

the key is that anything that really cleans needs to have extended use.  for an injector cleaner to have any chance to work, you would need to run it for at least 20 minutes.  the cost of that would be more than a professional cleaning, assuming you didn't damage the engine.

Thought it was a bit entertaining. I am not endorsing Seafoam for sure.

A professional injector cleaning has its downsides too. Companies that ultrasonically clean injectors use a cleaner that is dry. It evaporates very quickly and injector needles tend to stick when

installed back in car. Gasoline is actually a lubricant for injectors. It takes several minutes for injectors to start working again after cleaning. Cars run terribly and knock until all injectors start flowing again. Then cars run great.

I think there are two solutions.

Run Rite Hammer injector cleaner works very well over time. I sold this product years ago but didn't have enough support to continue handling.

A new injector package. I know of a really good package and it may be the long run fix for our cars. I won't start marketing until enough people realize this may be the way to go.

I run Techron thru the tank pretty regularly. So far haven't had an injector issue with 93k miles, at least I don't think one has been replaced yet. How long should injectors last?

interesting to hear about cleaning issues.  i wonder if it is the specific process?  i have never really had an injector set i had cleaned give me any grief at all, when using RC Engineering or Five-O.  the worst was about 4-5 seconds of stumbling at idle with 1 brand new set of injectors from Five-0, and that was on a supercharged engine.  i have had issue with a couple from Marren, and have heard of plenty of problems with Witchhunter.  I don't know what the difference is with the process of each company.  i only know of my own results, and what i have been told.

i applaud efforts to come up with new, and hopefully better, support for these cars.  there may well be an injector package that would work, and given the fact that the injectors for this car are nearly NLA, it would be a good thing for those who own these cars.

just a note of caution to those who will invariably have to deal with their injectors at some point, which is pretty much just common sense: care should be taken when selecting injectors for substitution.  emissions testing can easily become an issue with that.  engine life can be affected too.  i tried multiple pintel injectors, and they ran like crap at low rpm / low load scenarios.  if i got ones to run enough fuel for the top end, they were ugly down low, which eventually would have ruined the engine, though it did look like they might work well on a race car.  i was focused on a street car though, and i was going to have to completely remap everything, and that meant multiple emissions tests to be sure it passed.  in the end, only the single pintel type worked right.  if the car is to be subjected to emissions tests, or if it is driven around town a lot, i would look at the A/F readings, at all load levels, to be sure they were not going to cause problems, especially on a high mileage engine.
