In Car Entertainment.??
#1

This i presume will have been HAMMERED to death.... BUT, here goes..

I have a 68 cabrio...UK version WITH rear seats....+ I want to keep them...

Im looking into "upgrading" the I.C.E in the car...

Has any of you chaps positioned the subwoofer behind the front seats...???

In the foot well to be precise.??

If so what size sub did you use....????

Did you put it in an enclosure.???

+ where did you position the amp to drive it.???

I have the original Porsche 10 speaker "nokia" option , but it seems to be "wanting" . + was after a reasonable upgrade...ie replacing the "nokias" with something better , BUT without "hacking" the door panels to bits..

Is there anything on the market that will fit into the original places without any surgery.???

Any suggestions will be greatly apreciated...

OK i may only have 8 speakers in my cab... 3 in the each of the front doors + 1 in each back quarter panel... Minor oversight/ exageration by me....

Big Dave,

Did similar research and found nothing that would yield good performance and fit either under OR behind the front seats. There are many on this forum that have modified the rear cubby section and have built subwoofer enclosures. I'd bet they work great but since you want to keep the rear seats, that is not an option in your case. There are some good threads on this board about putting subs in a cab...use the search to find them.

With regards to replacing the speakers, I also have the 8 spkr setup in my cab. I am getting ready to replace/upgrade all of the speakers with Polk Momo products. The front woofers are 5 1/4", the factory tweeter locations are relatively easy to modify to practically any component tweeter but will require some fabricating. I plan to keep the factory grille but mount my component tweeter from behind. I did not ever find any 3 1/2" midrange and have decided to just seal up the hole with some ABS plastic, again from behind. My whole philosophy is the same as yours...to upgrade speakers without "hacking" the car apart. There are many direct replacement pieces that will drop in the factory locations. If you opt for a component system, make sure the crossover will fit behind the armrest where the existing nokia crossover currently resides.

For subs, I have some small powered slim mount Kenwood boxes that I plan to put behind the seat cubbies. I am anxious to see how they sound as they shouldn't sacrifice too much trunk space as a bazooka tube or other larger surface mount enclosure would. We shall see...

Getting good sound is another matter completely. I have been in audio all of my life and again, check these forums for others' opinions. I concur with Flash and others about EQ, parametric will be best, but anything above standard bass and treble will aid in better sound. This car is very mid-rangey and hard to get good bass without powered subs, which usually means sacrificing trunk space. Many are exploring putting subs in the rear trunk side spaces but you'll still need to find a place for the amp(s).

Good luck!

ok - my bad

i never thought of that as a footwell, as cabs don't have rear seats here in the US, so there would be no feet to be there in the first place - and i sure don't remember seeing the clarification of it being a UK car with rear seats when i responded

moving on

i have had a 200W 6" bazooka behind the passenger seat, with reasonable and affordable success - it reduced the seat travel by about 1.5", making the passengers knees very close to the glove box if they are over 5'8 - worked ok, but not as much as i want - off axis sound and rear area compromise was more than i want

having tried everything currently available, i am working on a sub that will sit in the left rear "cubby" or wheel well space in the trunk - it will handle a single 10" - amp will reside right there as well

Back again..

Ive just found a pic of a car,, I presume its a USA spec car ...

http://mguthrie.net/img/968_P1010022.JPG

Ive had a re-think about the rear seats... Is the car in the pics ,, a standard US spec 968 cabrio.???

If so im now on the hunt for a rear seat "cubby"..Anybody know of one breaking or selling the rear seat bits.....It looks realy cool, + could be modded to fit all my hi-fi needs into......

that is a standard us cab setup

that looks to be the same size bazooka i had lying down behind the passenger seat on the floor

the rear storage boxes you see there are not anywhere near airtight, so making them work as subs is very tough - it is made of abs and thin plywood, and weighs about 20lbs as is without the necessary additional wood to enclose it to make it a functional sub

i gave that idea a shot, but given the odd shape, i could not come up with anything that really worked very well, gave enough sealed airspace for adequate drivers, and would look right in the end

i believe one guy built an enclosure working with that unit though - the enxclosure airspace was small, and i suspect the box only supports down to about 60 hz or so, but it fit in the hole

Big Dave,

I found this thread very useful. It is mainly about subwoofers but has other good info as well. There is one post with a link to a users site with some pictures of sub box(es) that take the place of the rear seat cubby. If I was looking to go more aggressive with the audio portion of 968 ownership, I'd seriously consider this route. The sound should be better than anything you'd get in the trunk, or as Flash has mentioned, in the cubbies themselves. I'm sure a custom install place would have many variations on this theme.

If the above link doesn't work, it is is the Modifications area entitled "Which subwoofer do you have and are you happy with it"
