It's just the "horses" wanting to be "let out"!

Mine hunted a tiny bit too. Then I let all the horses out of the barn at once, not a good idea. It hunts no more, steady idle at 0.

Don't all these cars hunt the idle a bit ??

I have seen many of them but never seen one keeping a 100% steady idle .

Also with the fuel pump noise ,i can hear mine now and then when the car idles , i did change pump and check valve , no difference , and old pump seemed still in great shape .

I think some pump noise will always be there .

One thing did your FPR leak fuel at the vacuum side ?

I'm not sure where or if my old FPR was leaking, but changing it considerably improved the idle and pump noise.

I don't know how good the 968 idle normally is -- I've never been in one except my own, and the others that I've seen at the track are decidedly un-stock, so likely aren't a valid measure.

My 951 had a rock-solid idle, though.

I didn't do the check valve before last weekend: work was calling, and I figured I couldn't afford the time it would take. I still had a GREAT weekend at Mosport, though. Even in limp mode (bad Hall sensor) with a probable vacuum leak (I'm thinking it's the throttle body) this car was pretty quick and planted.

I'll change the check valve this weekend and report whether it further improves the idle situation / startup / fuel pump noise.

Ah, so it is possible! Mine had always hunted, too. I wonder how much of it might be related to subtle wear of the distrbutor mounting pieces (whatever those magnesium thingies are called). Mine weren't visibly cracked, but when I was putting my engine back together, I noticed the threads were all in pretty bad shape, so I put heli coils in all of them. If I ever finish muy project and fire it up, I'll report back as to the steadiness of the idle.

mine don't "hunt", but occasionally they will "fish".

basically they are both rock solid, but every once in a while it will"blip" and drop 30 or 40 rpm for an instant and then go right back

I think that's actually a more accurate description of the typical idle behavior of these cars. At least that's how mine behaved, although it's been so long since it ran that my memory is very fuzzy.

yeah - it only does it roughly once or twice a minute though.

Mine definitely hunts a bit. Haven't paid enough attention to it do describe it better.

Being from Oregon, I pretty sure it not only hunts, but fishes, bikes, hikes, climbs etc. And when I look at it just right it definitely appears green.

Okay, I got the fuel pump check valve changed at last. It's quite a straightforward procedure (I used a writeup on another site). It took me about two hours, for reference.

The car wouldn't start initially after I changed the valve. I found that I needed to jump across the relay socket to get the pump running and pump fuel back up into the rail, but then it started and ran well.

Better than before, in fact, and the pump is quieter than it was previously -- a further improvement to both idle and pump noise.

I was expecting to change the fuel filter while I was working back there (it's two years old) but the 944 one I had planned to use wasn't the right part.

Strangely enough I changed the fuel filter when I did mine and it didn't fit at first either even though it was the right part. I had to remove an adapter that came pre-installed on the filter and use the one from the old filter. It was really on there too so it was not meant to come off.

Maybe I should have investigated further. The threads on the upstream end of it were wrong, and the whole part was too long, so I assumed it wouldn't work and didn't try.
