Ideas on Tires?
#1

I have FISK PHANTOM 205/55ZR16 RADIAL ZRX tires all around. The rears are in good shape - about 10K miles and 4 years on them, 70% tread left. The fronts were not replaced at that time and although they have lots of tread left they are dry rotted.

I'd like to just replace the fronts to keep the bank account positive, but I can' find anyone who carries the Fisk tires (can't even find them on the Fisk site).

Seems like I have 2 options.

1) Find a good match for the Fisk rears (any ideas??)

2) To hell with the bank account and go for a new set alltogether.

Which option do you guys favor and what tires would you recommend for a full set replacement.

I will only be driving to church on Sundays and I'll probably not beat the car up, although I really do like sticky tires for that occasional power slide at the light.

Thanks

i do not recommend mixing tires

further, 4 years is beyond the shelf life of a tire - 3 years is max - after 3 years, tires stores are required to discard those tires - so, you are due for a change anyway, regardless of wear

so far, i have been impressed by the sumitomos i put on the white cab - this car will not be driven hard - very inexpensive tire - this is not a max performance tire, but a nice around town tire nonetheless - i cannot speak to longevity or long term noise yet

When I put the car into the DiscountTire sizer it comes back as 205/55-16 Fronts and 225/50-16 Rear. That sound right? They show Michelin Pilot Sport AS. I have Pilot Sport 18s on my RX8 and love them. But the AS is a different tire. The reviews indicate that people with land boats (740s, Lexus, Grand Prix, like that) use the AS. Any opinions about the AS?

What about Yokos? I put a set of Advans on my wifes Honda Van and they are great. First time I could take a real turn in that thing without feeling like I was going to roll over. Totally different vehicle of course.

How about Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3? The reviews are great from Corvette owners. The 968 feels kindof vette like in that it seems like a superb straight line cruiser and less of a twitchy carver (like my Mazda - it loves the twisties).

The new Sumitomo HTRZ III got a strong review from Tire Rack (beat similar Conti/Yoko/Bridgestone) and is very very reasonably priced. It is a Max Performance Summer tire. I am thinking of a set for my new 17" rims. Less than $400 to the installer.

I made an automatic assumption that you had 17" rims. It looks like the Michelin would not be an option for your 16" 's. Do the Goodyear Eagle F1's come in a 16"? There are a ton of great choices out there....good luck!

Too funny, this should be the quote of the year!

You are riding on 205 16's with dry rot, this might be the problem.

Soon as I hit the 'add' button I knew I'd take a lot of flak for the vette comment... I made it all the way to post 10 before I got slammed Well deserved I admit.

Yes the Eagles are available in 16s. So few 68s out there that there is only 1 review total at teh DiscountTire website.

Does the 17 make that much of a difference? The 16s look OK and I hate to shell out $1500 for 17" rims.

It is a matter of taste. I think the 16 underfills the wheel wells - particularly the rear. Going up to 225/245 combination helps that somewhat.

My 'new' (and slightly scratched) 17" 993 cup wheels were not half of $1500.

Do rims come up for sale on this site?

I have to drive about 400 miles and I'm a bit concerned that the fronts will blow apart so I kinda need to do something quick. I don't want to look like a nascar guy standing next to a Porsche on the side of the road with a torn up front right fender.
