I-pod, do U-pod?
#1

Blaupunkt just released an Ipod interface that allows you to control the Ipod from the head unit. Naturally I had to have one, but where to hide the Ipod so some clod, would not steal it?

At least for the mini It fits nicely below the ashtray if you remove the metal tray part and just leave the facade. The tray just unclips, so there is no cutting or snapping and the door part sits in there fairly securely for a stealth look.

So Dave how do you like the interface - My ipod sits in the old phone cradle (I have the original phone option center console) and I run a direct RCA connection through the console to my stereo - control and display are still with the ipod.

Being able to control the Ipod from the head unit is just like having a huge CD changer. Each folder is analogous to a CD disk and you can get the play list info right on the head unit display. All functions that your head unit has for controlling a CD changer are available. The interface also charges the battery and remembers where the last track was when you shut off the car.

You never need to touch the Ipod until you want to uplodad a new play list. That could be months or years!

True...Can you just put it on shuffle mode and shuffle all your songs - that's what I usually do - display of current song info on head unit would be great.

If the head unit supports shuffling, then yea it will. My Blau Acapulco does.

I bought an Creative Micro Zen a couple of months ago. I have been running it through an FM transmitter. It's ok, but there are some times when the reception is not very good. Is a way to hook it up to play directly (hard wired) through my head unit? Do i have to have a certain type? Right now I have a really low budget Blaupunkt, but i have a CDR 220 that is sitting in my closet. I haven't installed it yet, haven't had the time. Will either one work? Thanks

Must buy one asap. I still use that cigarette lighter plug connector.. trying to find stations with static around here is no easy task.

Typically the later models of head units support total Ipod control where the song titles scroll the display and FF, RW and shuffle are controlled by the head unit buttons. Look at Alpine, Blaupunkt and Kenwood, et. al. for specific features. Surf http://www.crutchfield.com for the specifics. Alpine seems to have the best selection that are Ipod ready.

Other models of MP3 players are typically not supported for full control, but many head units can take an AUX input where the headphone jack of the MP3 player can be plumbed into the unit. This is OK, but not optimal because you have to fiddle with both components.
