For the last seven or so years I have owned the 968, the overwhelming majority of people who have never seen a 968 before and come over at a gas station, parking lot, etc. to admire it and comment
on the car ask if it's " the new Porsche model ". With ONE exception; and this was just too funny of an experience not to share here.. I'm at a gas station just off hwy 101 near King City Ca, when this early 50-ish guy walks to the car, and says : " 76 ? " . Puzzled, I ask him what he means by "76", it had not even crossed my mind what he could possibly be talking about.. He says: " is this Porsh a '76 ? " Wow. Feeling somewhat deflated, I answer " no, it's a '94 " . He says, " I was off ". Yeah, no sh*t But now the fun part starts: He asks : " Is this eight or flat six cylinders ? " I reply : " No, it's a small block V 10 , they made only about 100 of them in 94 and 95 ". He replies : Jesus, that's gotta be fast ! " With a smile and a nod I say " Yup " . But wait, this gets better - he says " speaking of GERMAN cars, I am a family man so my wife and I have a VOLVO , which has a 2.4 L engine, not a diesel but it's still pretty slow, and my son wants to put a turbo on it when we buy our next car but I don't know if that's worth it on an old car like that.. " Very friendly guy and all that, but I really needed to end that conversation before my facial expression would have revealed what was going on in my head while speaking to him..
Then again, as clueless as he was, maybe he wouldn't have detected anything
