968 in Detroit Metro area
#1

Hi,

I have recently built a "mini hammer" diagnostic code reader. Currently my 968 is in the shop undergoing an engine transplant, so it has been unavailable. I am looking for a volunteer 968 in the Detroit metro area to plug my hammer into and test to see if it works. I am unaware of anything harmful that could come from plugging into the diagnostic port.....So I need a volunteer! Especially one who is in need of their airbag light reset!

Anyone who is in the area please let me know if you are interested!

and, while I'm all set to do the diagnostics, I still haven't received my interface unit.

Here's where I stand: I have found two local 968er's who have been kind enough to let me test the hammer on. I have been unable to connect to either car using my laptop. I have completely gone over every connection several times so I'm pretty convinced that it has to do with the serial adapter that I have been using. So my next step is to find a laptop with a built in serial port or drag my older desktop with built in serial port out to the garage and see if one of these options will work.

I'll keep you posted.

Regards

I recall a warning that a USB/serial adapter might not work. We're all "watching" with interest.

Yes Miles it is sad for you to discover. But try to use a normal desktop or an old laptop. This is because the new dockingstations are not compatible with the low speed baudrate of 8800 that is needed for the electronics.

Uh-oh - that suggests that what I thought would be my solution (if I ever get my interface) may not be. I have a Lenovo laptop with a docking station that has the serial port. If that isn't compatible, then I may have to find and purchase an old laptop. Ah, well, if it was easy...

BTW - no one has responded to a separate post in a different topic, but I saw a real Bosch Hammer for sale at the Hershey swap meet. Asking price was...$1,500!!!

OK, I've been meaning to jump into this topic both here and 968.net (RIP) but haven't had the time and couldn't dedicate any resources to the project. I'm thinking now's the time to change that... I'd love to help if I can, and having both EE and computer background, I'd hope I can be of some benefit.

8800 buad is a strange data rate. Is/was that a typo? 4800 or 9600 would be more like it. Is there anything special about the serial data transmission? I've used USB to serial adapters with everything from PBX phone systems to multi-room audio systems and XM radios. I was skeptical at first but I've had zero problems. I wish I were closer to help tinker. I've also got plenty of older hardware both desktop and laptop laying around and pretty much everything else I think I'd need except an oscilliscope. Is a scope really necessary?

I'll admit I'm a little behind on the threads, so if someone would be so kind to PM or e-mail me with a condensed version of where the project stands? Sounds as if you're close. Is there a schematic available to build this thing? Parts list? I'm sure a certain buddy (ex-boss/co-worker) of mine and I could whip this thing out and there are a half dozen or so 968s around here to test on, mine included.

An interface unit is made by a fellow in England (see Andy Whittaker - ECUFix.com <mail@ecufix.com>). Andy also has pointed us to the necessary software. The unit has four wires that have to be connected to the OBD1 connector - the instructions in another thread show which wires go to which points. The interface connects to the serial port. I have a ZIP file that contains all of the relevant info, including a schematic. I ordered the interface unit, which has gotten lost in transit. This thread (http://www.968forums.com/index.php?showtopic=2785) contains more info. You're up - what can we do?

I too thought the baud rates are a bit unusual? I also completely forgot that I can specify the baud rate of my serial adapter. I think the baud rate can also be changed in the software itself. I wish I had remembered that the baud rate could be changed and that I had more time with the test cars to try these adjustment. I will try these changes the next time I have the chance to connect to another volunteer.

The USB converter is a strange thing. It has also given problems connected to the car in the rennlist threads. That is why I preffer to use a laptop with a comport in it.

In case of Anchorman, I do think it will work with the dockingstation. I do not hope this laptop has an onboard usb/converter... Then it could be a problem.

If someone finds the solution. Mail me this so I can edit an update the original thread. That will be very handy so all the documantation can be found at one place.

Darryl yes the interface works with mine 968 overhere in Europe. I do hope it will go work oversees.

I have made a complete FAQ from the work i've done so far.

Darryl this is the FAQ topic
