New 968 owner in NJ
#1

Hello all,

After much research on 944's, 968's, and potential for LS swaps, I found a local 968 on craigslist and pulled the trigger.

Its a 1992 Coupe 6 speed. I purchased it from its original owner in fairly good shape. I just finished replacing the stereo and speakers (original HiFi setup stopped working), and I'm currently replacing the plastic mesh grille (since the original is cracked and mostly missing).

Hi Ron,

I'm in Bucks County PA and the wife and I like to drive up Rt. 32 to Frenchtown. If you ever want to meet, send me a note.

Welcome,

Jay

Welcome. By looking at your address, I am right around the corner.

Happy to help with 968 mx stuff if you're not familiar. I've been messing around with 968s and 944s since 97.

Thanks Guys!

Joel, you're literally 10 minutes from me. I may take you up on that offer.

I have a background with Subaru's and VW's, and so far this 968 is similar in that its pretty easy to work on. I'm sure though I'll get into some complex stuff when its time for an LS swap.

lol - yeah - like it won't work well. do a LOT of reading on that one, and absolutely go drive one first. it is NOT like a 944 LS swap. i would be happy to put you in touch with somebody who did it, spent over $30k doing it, and in the end, put the 968 engine back in the car (albeit a supercharged one).

Joel,

I'm not far away either; long time owner of 944's and now a very nice 968. I'm very active in the Porsche club community and know most of the shops including the ones that really know about 944s and 968s. Feel free to contact me any time.

Right now, I'm doing last minute checks before I drive to our VIR track event (Drivers Ed) this coming weekend.

Welcome

Not to hijack the welcome to Ron, but I'm fairly active in the PCA as well. I used to be very active with the Delaware region, and was VP of Sonnenschein for a time. I'm currently with the Jersey Shore Region, but run events with NASA, PCA (Delaware, Schattenbaum, and JSR), and some BMW stuff. I'm right on the border of Schattenbaum and JSR. I know of Provost (Haven't used but Max is the bomb) and BodyMotion (I've used these guys and get great service there.). Are there others?

I do most of my own work and have the head off the 968 currently waiting for the head guy to get it done. He's supposed to be fantastic, but he's certainly slow...

I'd love to do an event with everyone. Alas this year was a wash because of my military retirement, the head work, and just being gone for work. Next year...

Hey Flash,

Thanks for the info. Can you elaborate anymore on the LS swap issues? The 944 & 968 are nearly the same as far as dimensions and balance are concerned, so I dont see how an LS swap could be so different between the two. With that said, I've never driven one and would like to hear your experience. Thanks!

it isn't all that different. it's horrible in the 944 too. by the time you are done, the LS adds over 100lbs to the front end of the car. that messes with the balance, which is one of the things that makes this car work.

another big problem is the gearing. no matter what box you run, the gearing is all wrong for a V8. you'll have to spend a bundle to change that. none of the boxes are rated for the amount of torque output either.

same goes for the torque tube.

then there's the mess with the brakes. the hydroboost feels like crap.

wiring is a whole different animal. the 968 runs a lot more through the ECU than the 944. that will take some serious patching to get everything working.

basically, you take a well balanced car, and turn it into a pile of junk. sure, it has gobs of torque, but everything about the car changes, and not for the better.

most of the guys who do these conversions end up selling the car. no surprise.

Thanks Flash.

I've thought about the weight and transmission issues & options, but didn't know about the ECU difference or the Hydroboost changing brake feel.

LS weight difference I've read different things which depend on if you go with an aluminum or iron block. Aluminum is 40 lbs less than stock and iron block is 100 lbs heavier. Stock gear ratios definitely aren't perfect for an LS swap, but there are C5 options (I dont know much about these yet, lots of reading to do).

I guess I've got lots of reading and research to do.
