Hi from The Netherlands
#1

Hi all,

As a Dutch car enthusiast I am looking for a new hobby 'character car'. Requirements list:

- convertible/cabriolet/targa car

- and not just a regular car with the roof cut: so no Opel/Vauxhall/VW/Peugeot/... family cars in cabrio version

- classic or youngtimer preferred

- given the West-European road qualities nowadays, I no longer need the superb comfort of my previous Citroëns (GSA, XM, CX)

- and I do want a quality brand: I love my daily BMW 320i after all my French and Italian quality cars before

What came to mind:

- Volvo C70 (nah not really character), BMW E46 (too old yet no classic) or E93 (too new, too small boot because of steel roof)

- Porsche 911 3.2 Carrera Targa or 964 Targa (last: too small boot). No 911 cabriolet: no space for 2 kids at the back seats

- 944 S2 Cabriolet: almost bought, yet with roof open no head room for kids left and only 2-point seat belts possible at back.

And now looking for: 968 Targa (my wife and I prefer the clean 968 looks over the sturdy 944 looks; technically a 944 Targa could also fit the requirements).

Welcome! Best of luck with the search. There's definitely a very strong Dutch contingent on this forum!

Im seriously thinking about going to the Netherlands this year. For the awakenings festival. Welcome. Of course I have a 968/44 bias so I wont influence your choice too much.

Hey, appreciate that Ritchie. Just might take you up on it too. Ill know soon for sure. This will be my first trip to Europe.

Rogier, just seen your reply. Ill let you guys know. Awakenings looks like its going to be a pretty big shindig. I was a techno promoter throughout the 90's. The lineup is frickin killer. I dont want to miss it for nothing. Just a matter of budgeting at this point, and getting my passport.

edit: Do you guys by chance know the cheapest airport to fly into?

Where do you need to go? Amsterdam is expensive and crowded, Brussels means walking MILES and Dusseldorf is very practical/convenient.

I guess the show is in Recreatiegebied, Halfweg? Of course Ill want to take some time to visit Amsterdam, and the cafes. See what they are like compared to Vancouver. Dusseldorf seem like the best location with all that in mind?

Awakening is in Halfweg? That is just in/near Amsterdam: so just go there and reserve some time for check-in, customs etc. Ever since 911 (not the Porsche) especially flights to and from the US suffer from very, very rigid security checks. And even with ALL customs lanes open, queues up to 45-60 minutes are no exception.

Welkom! Nice to have another Dutchie on board. Interesting, this is the first time I have heard complaints about the lack of headroom with the top open.

Lack of headroom in a cab with roof open, yes that does sound weird indeed

What I mean is that the roof/top cover falls even over the head rests of the rear seats (and the roof mechanism is not far behind too):

Compare that to the late 944 or nice 968 coupé/Targa rear seats, even with side headrests for the kids:

Complete with 3-point automatic belts (or at least the mounting points, yet all studied cars so far do have the belts already installed) and I am affraid that my mid-life crisis is not deep enough to completly ignore my little darlings

EDIT: hey why DO I see the images in preview, but not when saved/submitted!?

I believe images do not work in the introduction forum.

And yesterday bought myself my first Porsche, a 1994 Midnight Blue Targa. With some work (airco compressor, 2 tires and some minor cosmetics to do) - yet that was included in the price. Now need to have the patience as the trader will fix the cosmetics I cannot do myself (some scratch removal and spray painting), so I will have to wait for about a week

Congratulations Rogier! I have been keeping an eye on that car for a while now, if it is anywhere near as good in real life as it is in the ad this was a fantastic deal. And of course in the nicest colour by far..
