Hello New Member from North Carolina
#1

I am glad to be member of this forum and currently own two BMWs.  I am contemplating acquiring in the next year a Porsche 968 6MT coupe to replace my 2004 E46 ZHP 6MT convertible.   I've enjoyed the journey becoming a knowledgeable restorer of an E46 and now am contemplating a new journey with another fine car design.  I joined this board to get up to speed regarding what is involved with purchasing, maintaining and having fun with a Porsche 968.

Thanks, Jay.  If there is a central North Carolina 968 owner that would let me tag along on a 10 minute drive, I'd be much obliged.  I'm interested in hearing the engine sounds, feeling the way the vehicle moves and watching the owner go through the gears (has to be a 6MT!).

I have many questions to pose to the forum members regarding specific parts availability (only 5000 of these lovely cars sold in the USA, yes?) and other aspects like A/C refrigerant conversion to Freon 134, etc.  Will pose these questions in the respective forum areas.

I've been a member of the ZHP Mafia forum under the name wstr75 since early 2015.  The 968 forum appears to be managed the same way where no flaming is allowed and respect for fellow members is required.  I applaud your forum for this discipline.

Welcome. If you're concerned about parts availability, I believe there is a thread here somewhere which lists most NLA ( no longer available ) parts and also some after market or other manufacturers alternatives to those, Otherwise, take your time, do a lot of search through the various technical threads and get familiar and comfortable enough with the 968 . It's a fantastic car, in every respect , IMO .

Welcome!

There are a few on here who have very detailed knowledge of these vehicles and will suggest seemingly illogical (but almost always correct) diagnoses for your problems.

Take them seriously, they know what they are talking about. You will not get thoroughly flamed for disregarding their advice, but you may suffer a mild flash-burn.

It should all be taken with good humor. These are quirky cars and some of the members here have (literally!) decades of experience with their quirks. They have seen what happens when the wrong pressure plate is installed, and it's not pretty. So, even though your dealer might assure you that this is the right replacement pressure plate, trust the combined wisdom and experience of those on the forum. Get the right one from Pete at RS barn and save yourself the time and cost of doing the job twice.

There is a thread on here for new owner advice, take a look and ask questions if something doesn't make sense to you. We have all been there.

Welcome to the forum and welcome to the learning curve.

MLB,

I still have my silver 330Ci convertible and drove it 70 miles today. Love driving its manual transmission as I think it subconsciously takes me back in time when my first cars (and our farm tractors) had manual transmissions. My other BMW is a 335Ix convertible with all the nannies. It’s getting most of the miles these days.
