Hello from the sunny side of Australia
#1

Hi there, I have just adopted a guards red 92 968 tiptronic coupe, 185,000km. The car has been in storage for a couple of years but has been in the family since 1996. I think that the car is too good to be sitting in a garage and needs a new owner before it becomes a barn find.

I have set myself the task of bringing the car back to a neat condition with no issues before selling. Well at least that is the plan, if I do not become addicted to the car in the process <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/rolleyes.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> It is nice driving a car that you always look back at after parking. I am not a Porsche newbie, had a 1974 911 for many years. Hope you water pumper people will not hold that against me. Tinkered with that car for many years until I decided there was too much rust than I was prepared to fix.

No big problems with the 968, just needs some love and money (certainly no rust). I am compiling a wish list of things to fix. Hence joining this site to get some info on what makes these cars tick. The car was a daily driver and mechanically very well maintained before storage. The interior is great but being a one driver car the drivers seat is torn on the bolster and the drivers door was torn from to much arm resting.

Only got the car going last week, started like a dream, but so far:

New battery

Wash and light detail

Repaired left hand brake light

Replaced drivers side door trim

Adjust boot catch (opens but still not happy)

Wish list

Repair drivers seat, leather torn and button has come off electronic adjustment

Repaint drivers door handle

Give some Viagra to the floppy glove box

Rear wiper

Led brake light not working

New seals for sills

New 968 badge

Restore paintwork

Fix centre console hinge

Remove white paint splashed under front wheel

Repair brakes, pad light comes on intermittently

Replace all fluids

Timing belt (last done in 06 according to the sticker, need to look through paperwork)

Aircleaner

Repair minor wheel scuffing

Clean, clean, clean

So now you know my problems all advice will be gratefully received.

Will post pics of the car after a wash (too sad to show before hand), the new door trim fitted and the seat damage.

This site has some great information. It would appear that many of the things wrong with my car have been encountered by someone else on here.

Tried the rear wiper fix. Wiper motor getting power, opened the motor and the thing is corroded solid tried to clean it out but the gears are just too damaged. Add a new wiper motor to the list.

Spent about 5 hours polishing/buffing the rh front guard and bonnet (as that is what I see when I open the garage door). Really impressed with the results the paint has come up like new. Based on todays time investment only another 30 or so hours and I will be finished polishing.

My car is a guards red 92 and has a clear coat, found a lot of info on the net indicating that it would be a single stage paintwork.

Can't post the pictures promised in my last post, still need to improve my posting status.

As least on your side of the country your car does not need floaties to get around.

You will find heaps of info within this site.

Hi,

Having just been through much of this myself, a couple of quick fix ideas:-

1. Delete the rear wiper and install a plug. These are available from a number of places - I think I got mine from the UK but there are plenty of firms who can supply. It never rains in WA anyway!! I think the car looks better and I like the idea of removing all that weight from the somewhat fragile rear hatch.

2. Out of interest, I did a temporary fix of my console hinge with some good quality fabric duct tape. This was around 2 years ago and was supposed to be temporary whilst I researched the hinge issue. Still works an absolute treat and has more give that the dodgy plastic orginal. Not a purist thing but absolutely nobdy would ever know.

3. One of the best jobs I did was replacing the trim seals (make sure you order a selecton of the plastic clips before starting) and giving the trims a really good clean and polish. What I thought were stonechips was actually splattered thermoplastic linemarking paint. This was a complete bugger to remove but made a huge improvement for an afternoons work.

4. Replace the crazed stoenguards also made a huge difference but again was an abolute cow of a job. (there are very good DIY articles on the forum for the above 2 items as well as the rear wiper delete).

5. You might need a check on the variocam unit - see link below. This was an expensive surprise for me but luckily I was able to split it with the seller of my car having had an excellent mechanic who picked this up in the pre-purchse check.

6. Repaint the black paint around the glass of my rear hatch. I uses a matt glass paint and this also made a big difference.

7. You can but new hinges for the glove box or there is a good DIY article to make some new ones on the forum.

Good luck. Hopefully you will enjoy driving the car.

Cheers,

Peter

Thanks Guys

Seem that most 968 owners are over east. Did see a green 968 the other day on the way home so there must be some over here.

Well the polishing is done. I think it has taken me 20 hours all up. Happy with the results well worth the effort. Regarding my earlier comment, the car had no more clear coat from the doors back? Strange, did Porsche make it this way? I was sure the car has not been resprayed at the front.

I must say even though this is a 19 year old car, it is a pleasure to restore, you lift the carpet back and it is like the day it left the factory. No rust, have to love this dry WA climate.

Peter, thanks for your detailed reply. Considering the removal of the rear wiper but I have found a motor on the net for about $170, I would like to try and keep the car as original as possible, might as well enjoy this strong Aussie peso whilst I can.

My car is already running the duct tape hinge, works well, I have found LHD hinges for $30 but need to find out if still available in RHD.

Now the car is shiny the trim seals look really bad just hanging there, I have found the diy article on this site.

I have had a small try to remove the crazed stone guard but it is lifting the clear coat, I found a diy article that refers to using heat but am still a little concerned about the removal. Do not want to have to repaint the front wings.

The car has a steering issue, one of the castor blocks is looking a little average. It is the new style block. The good side is the older style block. I would have thought these would have been replaced as a pair, especially as this car always had every dollar spent on it that was needed.I have parked the car until I fix it. It is a little vague off centre and as I back out of the drive it gives a clunk that I feel through the brake pedal.

Thanks for all the other tips, now found the glove box repair kit on Pelican.

Now to get these rims off for a tidy up.

Regards

Jamie
