Hello from Planet Andrew
#1

Hello, I'm Andrew from Sydney in Australia.

I'm looking to buy my first P car and it's likely to be a 968.

I have a yellow Mitsubishi Evo 9 that I bought new 10 years ago and it now has approx 175k miles on it, a MB C200 we bought 2nd hand about 15 months ago and have put approx 35k miles on it, and a vehicle that you would know as an Isuzu Trooper which is known as a Jackaroo here that has approx 200k miles on it (hence my nickname of JAKROO).  I do a lot of driving and spend a lot of money on tyres, oil, filters and fuel!

I figured this place could well be a great knowledge source for these P cars as it is quite a small number of owners in Australia....

Welcome. Enjoy your search. You should look for a low mileage 968!

Hi Andrew, Welcome to the Forum. This is Mark from Gold Coast. I have two 968, one is my race car, which is 92 MO30, and it is now in Australia with me. The other 968 is 94 CAP, however it is still in Syracuse NY USA. I used both of the cars on famous Watkins Glen Circuit to have some extra fun when I was living some years in USA. This site has lots of information, however if you like to have a chat, please send your mobile number and e-mail address to me. RGS. Mark Wekara, 0412 303 940, m.wekara@optigolf.com.au

Welcome Andrew. A Trooper? They were sold as Opel Monterey over here, forgot completely about those. Troopers have been re-badged A LOT so it seems.

Soooo, I have now purchased my new to me car...it's a 1992 968 tipper.

About 10 years ago, the owner I bought it from spent a lot of time and money on this car.  Back to metal respray going from black to a metallic black that has a light gold flake in it.  Looks fantastic in the sun but impossible to photograph (or at least for a non photographer like me).  All new rubbers and a lot of money spent on the engine bringing it back to new.

Their money = my win.  They drove it approx 11,000kms (7k miles) in the 10 years they owned it.

It's a beautiful car to drive.  This era of car (regardless of manufacturer) had road noise, heavier steering and the gentle waft of mechanical effort as you work the car along the road.

After about 600kms of my driving over the first few days of getting it, I have managed to bust the odometer which I've since found out is a weakness of the vehicle.  I'll pull out the speedo and get it fixed.

Loving it.

No prob just what to understand. Road noise might be your tires. It's not heavy steering it's merely nannyless.

I wasn't complaining about the road noise or the heavIER (not heavy) steering...it's a simple fact that a 25+ year old car has less technology, squeaks more, and is all round a 'rougher' car than a modern one.  It's nice to re-experience these, that's for sure :-)
