Yeah! Warren usually drives a Lincoln. He auctioned his 2001 Lincoln off for charity a few years ago. Got pretty a good price for it. Last time he was in the local news, he was out for dinner and an ice cream cone with Sir Paul McCartney, who was in town for a concert.
Bought the 968 4 years ago from a PCA member in Newark, NJ. He was selling it to get a 964. It had 51K on it at the time. It's my daily driver, unless the Nebraska weather forces me to drive my Jeep. Don't think that Weissach designed a car to sit in a garage and it snows in Germany, too. Just too slick some days to drive it. I have done some PCA Drivers Ed sessions in 944s, and I am looking to track this car next year at a couple of Drivers Ed events. I cannot believe how this car behaves in relation to a 944. Even better than the 88 944S I had. The car is more stable with the wider back end and the Vario cam is almost like a turbo, but with more torque feel and more control. It may not have the head snap of the boost kicking in, but you can feel it when it changes profiles. The fit and finish is so much better coming from the factory in Weissach, as compared to the 944, built under contract to Audi.
The car definitely solved everything that was a bit hinkey in the 944, even down to the weight in the rear corner to get rid of the annoying harmonic in the body. Moving the engine back a bit not only helped balance the weight more toward the center of the car, but sure gave you more room to change the timing belt, without having to remove all of the other belts and tearing your knuckles up. Only mods I have made are to update the plug and coil wires to 8mm racing wires, exchanged the Denso AC compressor with an after market rotary compressor, replaced the Bosch plugs with NGKs and went with Blue Line brake DOT5 brake fluid.
Otherwise the car is stock. No wear in the leather seats, and only a few minor cracks in the dash. I am thinking of sending the dash out some time this winter to have it recovered in Marine Blue leather. I also replaced all of the dash lights, but need to figure out how to replace the reflectors in the dash, as the replacement reflectors are no longer available. I have seen some articles on using alum foil, but looking for a better alternative. I have a set of rally tires on the original rims for summer, but use a set of Continental All Seasons in the winter on a set of 951 rims I bought for my old 944S.
Any other questions certainly welcome. I have been a PCA member since 1997 and am fairly versed in the 4 cyl water pumpers.
Good driving to all of you and be safe out there!
