Hello from New Zealand :)
#1

Hello one and all from New Zealand!  My wife is the proud owner of a 1992 968 Cabriolet 6 speed manual in the L82N - TU colour (Rubystone reb - Light Grey Interior)

Short story - My wife kicked out the boyfriend at the time and to feel better about herself blew the (insufficient) house deposit on a car.

The long story is: My co-worker had an obsession with pink and I spotted this fabulous pink car advertised in the newspaper (yes, 17 years ago this is actually how we bought cars!).  I rang the dealership and asked them to have the car available for us to test drive during our lunch hour.  However, in the drive to the dealership she chickened out in the belief that her husband would kill her (I’m 100% sure she still regrets it).  I  was of the opinion that we had come all the way, we might as well drive it.  She refused to get behind the wheel, so I did instead.

I was instantly in love.  What a car! Despite it brutally humiliating me by stalling at the traffic lights (and believe me, everyone notices in that car), I was besotted.

In an attempt to regain sanity, I rang my father who worked near the dealership and is an engineer.  I asked him to go take a look, and give me a reason not to buy it.  Instead he put down the $5K he had in his pocket to hold it and told me if I didn’t buy it, he would buy it for my mother instead.  Well, obviously I had to save my mother from the fate of a ridiculous pink Porsche.  The rest is history.

History of the car:

It was a special order  car shipped out directly from the factory in 1991 to New Zealand (Right hand drive).  Technically it's registered as a 1991 car as it arrived in New Zealand in October and was registered that month.  The person who ordered it thought "Rubystone red" would look like a Ferrari red, so it's little surprise when it turned up they decided they didn't want it anymore.  It's definitely a head turner and gets noticed everywhere we go.  Over the years we've ran into people who have given us the history behind the car and the previous owner to my wife - who literally came running across the road shouting "oh my god - that's my old car!"  We always talk to them whenever we meet up on Porsche rallys.  Being a 6 speed manual cabriolet is rare enough, let alone the Rubystone red which was only offered in the 1992 manufacturing year.  We're based in Wellington, New Zealand.

A couple of fun stories:

The first time I filled it up, an anonymous benefactor paid for my petrol so initially I thought it was going to be cheap to run.  Sadly, it never happened again.

A memorable highlight is driving along State Highway One with a couple of girlfriends crammed in the car and a freight train running next to us honking and waving.  We thought we were all that!

I have a fabulous photo of my Grandma, sitting in my car and flipping the bird to the camera.  She was really quite proper and it was so unlike her – I will always treasure that photo!
