Hi from Birmingham
#1

Hi folks,

New member here. I owned a 968 in the late 90's for about six months, then we found out about having our first child and it had to go. I am at a point now where I can get another. Just starting to look around, if anyone has any thoughts about what I should look for/avoid would love to hear.

Thanks

Daniel

welcome. look for one with complete service records, get it inspected and at a price that works for you. As a relatively new owner I found patience to be important so as not to select the wrong one.

There seem to be a pretty decent amount of them on the market right now in varying conditions... Definitely get a PPI (Check out the Buyer's Guide section for one you can download and bring to your mechanic to fill out). Compression test too.

Pinion Bearing is a big one to look out for...that I missed when I bought my car. You'll hear a "whirring" like a jet engine coming from the rear (hopefully not as loud as a jet engine), and it'll increase in volume starting at about 35-40mph. If you hear this, factor in $2k for replacement.

Belts need changing ever 3-5 years no matter the mileage, so find out the last time those were done.

Anyway, a lot more to be found in the buyers guide section of this site...good luck!

Welcome.

As with you, I parted with my last P-car in the late 90's due to oncoming offspring, and just recently got back into P-car ownership. I had to look for several years to find a car worth owning - the 968's are teetering on the same precipice today that the 944's were when you last owned a P-car, that of the young or well-intentioned but soon-overwhelmed owner who buys one only to find he cannot keep up with the maintenance and it either gets "cobbed" or "deferred" to the next owner. You don't want that to be you! There are *no* cheap Porsches once maintenance and "make it right" projects are accounted for.

There are a few major gotchas which you'll find during your reading here, the pinion bearing in the six-speed being one (but it's loud and obvious), the flex dampener failure in the tiptronic being another (more stealthy and sudden), the timing belts needing to be replaced after certain miles OR certain years regardless of miles, etc.

Ask early and often, and you may want to place your query about available cars here first - my search finally ended when I flew down to VA to meet with Darryl and see a fine selection of 968's all on the same day - prior to that I was making trips hither and yon, 6 or 7 hours of driving each time, only to find horrible examples of "deferred maintenance" awaited on the far end despite asking all the right questions over the phone and being assured of appropriate condition.

Enjoy your search. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/smile.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />
