i was driving to work last week. the weather had finally broken and it was time to get the 968 out on a regular basis. i was about 20 minutes into my drive and suddenly, i heard a jet engine sound from the rear of my car. my first thought was, oh no - pinion bearing! i kept driving and had my ears really peeled at this point. five minutes later, everything was fine. the drive home that night was fine.
i had almost forgotten about the experience until i was driving home a week later and heard the same dreaded jet engine sound. this time i really freaked out. first time was a fluke, but now there was a pattern developing.
as i was drifting off to sleep that night, it occurred to me that the common link between the two experiences was that i was on a different stretch of road than i normally drive. and the asphalt is brand new there.
so i drove our other car a few days later over the same stretch of road and lo and behold, the jet engine sound came in that car, too. needless to say, i was pretty excited that it wasn't just the 968, but the stretch of road causing the tires to sound funny.
or was it......?
our other car is an 04 vw touareg. six speed auto. shares many parts with porsche and audi. the 968 has an audi trans. is there any way that i have the same trans in both cars? and a further crazy fluke of nature that both would have pinions going at the same time that are only heard at this time on fresh pavement?
i'm going to guess that it's just funky asphalt at this point. but the coincidence would be an amazing thing....
