Good deal?

[quote name='Anchorman' date='May 23 2006, 12:39 PM']What a painful thought. We should all get together and do a bunch of buy/sell deals that get the prices UP, not down.

Hmmm, I wonder if listing the car for sale at some silly price ( let's say $ 90,000 )

might just bring out some eccentric, clueless individual thinking he's getting a deal on a collector's item and buy it..

He is getting it inspected for me over the next day or two (state inspection/emissions) and then I will pick it up when I get back there, so probably mid next week.

I have been reading alot about the pinion bearing, but still unclear how to diagnose it. The owner says he does hear a slight whine from the rear of the car, but in all the trips to the dealer for service they have never said anything about it nor ever mentioned the pinion bearing.

Its not really a huge issue since it sounds like it needs something near the clutch so the trans would need to come out down the road anyway, but still would like to know the urgency behind it. What happens if the pinion bearing fails? Warning signs?

On these cars, the clutch and the transmission are on opposite end of the torque tube (drive shaft) so doing clutch work doesn't mean doing anything with the transmission.

IIRC, the common warning sign of pinion bearing failure is a whine like a jet engine - particularly in deceleration. Some time ago, I had thought I had that, but (happily) it turned out to be tire whine.

Argh!

So, I went to the dealer with my friend yesterday morning and completed all the paperwork. Paid the taxes, transferred the title etc as he was finishing up the paperwork on his 996. I then leave to get back to the office.

I called him later that evening, just to see how his new car is, issues all over the place. Apparently he was told it was a 1 owner car, turns out carfax shows it to be a 3 owner car, this was discovered after he did all the paperwork and the car is now in his possession and paid for. The sales rep told him it was a 1 owner car, but I guess he then told my friend after the sale they just found that out, but my friend at that point was in a hard spot.

Now, my friend, is seriously concerned over the car. A one owner car vs. a three owner car is abig deal, specifically when he wanted a cream puff example. So, he asks me if I would consider selling him his car back......

He is not sure whats going on frankly, the dealer is closed until tuesday for the holiday and he is going to try and talk to them to see what his options are, if they will even take his new car back or what.

Either way, given the circumstances I really have no choice but to sell the car back to my friend, so it turns out I may not be keeping it for long. Sucks, but thats life I guess, I would be more pissed than my friend is honestly.

The "mere" fact that it's a three-owner, rather than one-owner, car does not, in itself, say it's a bad deal. Your friend really needs to know more - and, if he really likes the car, he should be careful not to let the emotion drive him away from what could end up being an even better deal (punishing the dealer for the misrepresentation could make up for a lot of what he's feeling).

Well at it turns out it looks like I am keeping the car, at least for now, so the 968 is now living in my garage happily. Only a few things I need to do with the car. I went over it with a fine tooth comb and noticed 2 very soft dents on the tops of each fender, likely from someone leaning on them, so I will have a dentless repair repair that (How do you pull the headlamps out easily?)

Other thing is the noise in the clutch, I heard it today, sounds like a banging. Owner told me something like a balancer plate behind the clutch disc, any ideas?

Otherwise great car, getting used to the long clutch draw, but otherwise the handling is absolutely stunning.
