Get Ready - Get Set - BLOW!!!!

before this gets out of hand, and i start again spending a lot of time going back and forth, let me say that i am almost done with the press release, which will answer nearly all of anyone's questions - it will only be a couple more days (basically i need to go out and record some performance numbers and drop them into my spreadsheet) - nearly everything else is done and ready to release

i am also going back to the dyno one more time to see if there is anything i left on the table anywhere

i also want to take a shot of the real airbox (i only have the prototype in there right now) as well as the optional front trim cover (i only had a mockup at hershey)

i hope to have everything done this week

As a guy who has put 1500 miles on an SC 968 let me just say this is the key to making the car really work for the modern world. Big middle, huge top end, a car that does not disappoint. The SC took the 968 from being the slowest car in my stable to perhaps the fastest, or at least in the game. Not likely to get the headlights sucked out by my A8 anyway.

Ya' know what would be cool to see? A well maintained 968 w/ ab mod, catback and chip, having a side by side run against the 968SC from 0 - 120ish. That would be an excellent gauge as to where the SC takes you.

I just don't get into charts the way the rest of you guys do.

Funny you should mention it, was planning to do just that the weekend of May 14, but unfortunately my trip to SoCal was postponed, so as far as the flashmobile vs danmobile comparison is concerned, it's going to take another month or two..

I am now both happy and sad.

A non-968forum reader may reply, "so what! get another 968 thats closer to Bob and get it done". However your 68 has had recent head work as well as all the mods mentioned to give it a little extra ummph. That will be needed as your not just running against a SC but one that's considerably lighter. So it really was the perfect show down. I mean you woud've lost but depending on how far and quick you fell behind we could gauge what would happen should we run against say a Shelby stang.

Anyhoo, when you make your way down there please pack the cam and upload it for us. Cause that's Must see TV.

lol - relax guys - i already thought of this - i've been recording the data for years

the chart will show a bone stock version of my car, my car as it was prior to the sc, and then it after the sc

" I mean you woud've lost but depending on how far and quick you fell behind " That's what I'm curious about as well, and I suspect from a stand still to 60 or so, the SC might be only half a car ahead - remember I shift at around 7000 rpm all day long, and I don't think you want to do that with an SC too often, so there could be moments ( albeit very brief ) where I might pull up a bit, but then from 60 to 120 it shouldn't be much of a contest. Just as would be the case from a rolling 60 to 120, or a rolling 40 to..whatever.. etc. Even when I downshift and he doesn't ( ' cause he does not need to ) I think the SC will pull a couple of cars ahead in say, any given 40mph segment. A video will definitely give a flavor of the acceleration delta among the two cars, as charts don't have much meaning to me either .. Now, I don't expect it will be like going up against a F430, and just watching its tail lights quickly fade away, but I believe it will be a pronounced difference nonetheless. What also compounds the difference is driver skill and as much as I hate to admit this in public, I'm not too close to Bob in that respect.. But we might switch cars for the race to even things out a bit more Wait, that won't work, Bob won't go all out in my car, just to make the SC look that much more impressive

Well, that's my theory, so I'm sad as well that I won't have a chance to test it as soon as originally planned.

Dan,

A bit OT, but why do you "shift all day at 7,000" when the power band dies after 5,700? You would be better served by shifting at 5,700 and taking advantage of the gears. Am I right on this???

not necessarily - the power band on the stock chip might peak at 6.2k and have peak torque at 4100, and pete's chip might peak not long after that, but the racer x chip (which dan is running) continued to make power all the way to well over 7.1k - it made less, but it peaked higher

also, shifting at or below peak power means that after the shift, you are below peak torque, and therefore losing acceleration - for maximum acceleration, you want to set your shift point so that after the shift you are at peak torque, which, on the racer x chip is about 4600 - so, to achieve that in first gear, you need to shift at about 7.2k

this is what you would do for a 0-60 dash

it's not so bad in taller gears

now, with the supercharger.................

rhude - i spotted him

the 0-60 stuff is going to have to wait - i need to find a better place to do the runs - i just went back out there, and a CHP was sitting there - not sure what that was all about

rsb peak torque is at 4250 - that would make the 1st gear optimal shift point right at about 7k

the shift points get lower as the gears get higher

during spirited dirivng, i always take it up over 7K RPM....When upshifting..the car lands higher in the powerband vs upshifting at 6.5KRPM. I have not run my 968 down the drag strip (everytime my buddies go, something comes up)...but to give you an example of a car i did run down the drag strip.

2002 Acura RSX Type-S peaks at 7,400RPM. Redline is 7,900RPM, Revlimit is 8,300RPM. Most magazines run 15.2-15.5sec 1/4's with the car. I took my buddys bone stock (including tires) RSX Type-S to english town and ran a 14.98 1/4 shifting at 8.2K RPM.

Jay, it looks like Bob answered your question on my behalf .. So the SC will definitely be a different driving experience - as I mentioned in another post I rarely ever let the rpm get below 4000, in any gear or at any speed. Heck, even on cruise control for the six hour drive to SoCal I keep it around 4000. I just like the note of the engine and the exhaust thereabout, and of course it does not hurt that stepping on it at that point works best.. So "playing" in that 4,000-7,000 rpm band constitutes the majority what this engine sees on any given day.. for over six years now. If I ever get the SC ( and that's a big "if" for me because of a bunch of considerations ) the aforementioned driving "style" is going to be one tough habit to break

Come come now. Design one has had its share of mishaps as well.
