Are "City Lights" Possible?
#1

Is it possible to retrofit "city lights" to the interior of the 968 headlamp globes?

For those of you that are unfamiliar with the concept, a single bulb (usually some type of 1157 Amber Or Clear) gives illumination to the entire headlamp globe when the parking lights are selected.

Most European cars require them, and from my experience auto makers leave a Vestigial plug allowing them to be retrofitted with ease.

I apologize if this has already been brought up, a search of the archives came up with NaDa.

i do not remember seeing any way for another bulb to be fitted to the lamp assembly - you can engage daytime driving lights through the fog lights though - there has recently been discussion, and i believe even a DIY on this

Flash,

Do you know if the US Spec headlamp globes were different from ROW?

If so is there any benefit to be had from Euro Headlamps?

On a side note, has ANYONE gone HID? (Xenon AKA High Intensity Discharge)

i haven't done either of those myself, because i want less, and not more light

that being said, i have not heard anything about the headlamps being different, though there is apparantly a difference in wiring or relays for the daytime running light thing - again, poke around, and you'll find it here

same goes for the HID thing - there has been discussion on that here too

check out the search function - you'll love it - very cool - very easy - very fast

I can confirm that the ROW headlamps are indeed different from the USA part, and have a small hole in the right place for the "city" light bulb.

I replaced my headlamps and got the Euro model by mistake, then returned them. If I was more ambitious at the time, I would have kept them and re-wired - just 'cause I like the running-light concept!

I think the PET lists both numbers. Can't tell ya which is which though.

renn-

i remember reading a post on 968.net about a daytime running light relay.

i think the factory part is one used in canada and ran about $100.

i also remember reading that a guy had a relay made for him on the west coast for much less $$. i think it may have been i oregon or washington.

i thought about doing this myself, because i've almost been hit a few times now. people just expect your lights to be on these days.

i don't remember reading anything on this forum.... maybe...

that is such an odd phenomenon - must be an east coast thing - heck, out here it seems most folks don't even run their headlights at night - we used to yell at folks that have their headlights on during the daytime - it was like leaving your turn signal on, or having your windshield wipers on with no rain (dumb guy.... dumb guy.... dumb guy)

Well on the East coast more and more cars are coming from the factory with daytime headlight illumination: GM started it and, with all their divisions this has meant a pretty rapid spread. Certainly helps when a, say, medium-grey car is coming at you on an overcast day. We view this as an advance, backed up by highway-safety studies. Hard to see what's dumb about it.

I don't get CA: they have more exceptions to their highway laws than any state in the country.

At any rate: I run the "Parking Light" switch to the left of the steering wheel (except for Flash) when dusk comes. This seems to help keep the car visible, although a Grand Prix White car is pretty much pure white, with a slight irridescent sheen to add to the visibliity.

Yes. you can have city lights in North America spec headlamps. The picture below shows the units I pulled out of my headlamps that the previous owner had put in. The wires were plumbed into the parking lamp circuit. I have no clue where to find them new. Heck, contact me offline, I'll sell 'em cheap!

The DRL's can be activated by a simple jumper wire if you don't want to buy the $100 relay. Thread here:

Greimann! Consider them SOLD!

Daytime Running Lights or "DRL's" should not be confused with "City Lights".

DRL's utilize the headlamps "Low Beam", while a city light is a dim integrated parking lamp that illuminates the headlamp globe, but DOES NOT project light.

In Portland it tends to rain more often then not, and it would be nice to have the added visibility withOUT running the actual headlamp keeping the frog eyes in there respective sockets.

I apologize for the confusion,

hmm - here in california, we are required to run our main headlights when it rains - is that not required in oregon?

There are smart, alert people in Oregon, they drive in rain all the time. California has to legislate intelligence into bad weather driving.

hmmm - maybe you need more light when you're stoned? actually it's probably because any yahoo can get a carry permit there, and they don't want to get mistaken for a deer and shot - i crack myself up - oops - my parents live in oregon (yes, they both have carry permits)

yeah- we're pretty dumb here - i guess we now also have to be told to turn on our wipers when it's raining

Yes, I'd have to agree- don't confuse city lights with daytime running lights. 5 years ago I had a Honda Prelude (1998- newest style) and inside it's large headlights were nice little "city lights."

I had never seen them before that car. Now you see them in all of the newer MBs with round headlights as well as Jaguars.

In case you don't know, the prelude's headlights were large and rectangular, sweeping back up the hood a little ways. The high beams used the lower 1.5" or so inches of the housing, down low and up front, resulting in a rectangular area for the lens. Up above that sweeping back and up was the low beam reflector.

Both high and low reflectors used an H1 Bulb. Inside the high beam were the city lights. They amounted to a tiny little bulb and I don't remember the size. They did not look sh!tty like the bulb pictured in this thread. They had their own little sockets and rubber gaskets but were easily replaced. I replaced them with a tiny white LED bulb and I liked them very much.

Point to all my blabber being with my experience with those, I don't think it would be hard at all to install a similar set in the 968 housing. You could find the sockets with gaskets and small LEDs probably for little money. Wiring wouldn't be a problem. I've wired several items in several cars so that they power on with the car. Or you could power them on with the parking lights if you want.

You would probably, at most, have to drill a 1/4" hole in the 968 housings. Removing metal shavings from the housings wouldn't be hard. I have learned to use a lot of aerosol solvents like carb cleaner to flush and remove metal shavings in my AR15 "hobby." You can flush shavings out and the solvent will dry completely residue free.

Or, you could drill a 3mm or 5mm hole and install a simple LED into the hole. I've got all sorts of sources for those because of my other older hobby- computers. White, Blue, Red, whatever you want- it can be gotten.

Maybe I'll look at the housings this evening and put my thinking cap on...

Hey- how do I keep track of topics I've responded to around here?
