gas milage curious
#1

in response to rising gas prices, some of us use our cars as daily drivers.

Was wondering what is normal gas milage on our cars. I think mine is about 14 per gallon. What are the different was to get better fuel efficiency i have a 93 cab

18 " tires at 30 lbs air in tires frt and rear engine has timing and tensioner belts changed beginning of year over 170,000 miles stock muffler no chip air box mod

Last tank was 23mpg with a 50/50 mix of back roads and 85mph highway all top down. It was about 19mpg mixed before RSBarn did some work and then chip/exhaust.

I get ~25mpg... I'd guess something is amiss if you average 14. Also, your air pressure seems low. Most tires can handle up to 40psi. Try running your pressure at 35psi - you'll notice better handling too.

My O2 sensors are more than 3 years old. My 3 year fuel mileage average, for nearly 70k miles, is 22.6 mpg.

Actually, the number is 22.635 mpg for 66,757 miles.

When I purchased this car, I decided that, for the first time, I would keep complete records. My wife still rolls her eyes every time she's with me when I fill up, because I take the printed receipt and write the odometer reading for later entry into my little spreadsheet. This kind of anal behavior is very "not me", but for my 968, I'll do almost anything.

You should see the looseleaf binder of receipts. Luckily, my wife doesn't know about that - although she does say that I'm driving the "$6 million car".

jim - you have way too much time on your hands to have calculated that

brian - your heavy wheels and the fact that it is a cab cost a bit in mileage, but that is still too low - you do have a lot of miles on your car, and that could be most of it

on 91 octane, at that mileage, with the wheels you have, and that it is a cab, i would expect about 15 around town and 23 on the highway

ways for better fuel efficiency would be, as suggested, keeping the inflation up to about 36, making sure you have the lightest oil you can run safely (probably 10-40 for where you are), and keeping it tuned up with fresh plugs, wires, cap and rotor

other than that, you will probably have to spend money - short of a fresh motor, you can benefit a bit from lighter wheels - those wheels and tires are likely costing you about 1-2 mpg because of the extra weight and fuel required to get them rolling and keep them that way

My car is a cab, with 18" wheels, and just under 135k miles. The worst mileage has been the tanks with DE events - generally in the range of 12 mpg. The best tanks are driving to and from DE events - generally in the range of 26 mpg.

Once the spreadsheet is set up, it's only a minute or two after every fillup to maintain it. Unhappily, time on my hands is not a current luxury. If it was, I'd be doing the work that Pete is currently doing on my car.

oopsie

you're using imperial gallons - for example, if you use US gallons in the first one, you get a bit over 25mpg

i calculated wrong. Filled up tank drove 199 miles filled up again took 9.5 gallons thus using simple math came out to 20 miles per gallon hwy miles

but still get much lower in city.

thanks will adjust air in tires.

i presume you are using 91 octane - do a blink test to make sure you don't have a variocam issue - that can cost you fuel - make sure your ignition components (plugs, wires, etc) are it tip top shape - those can easily be good for 4mpg if not working properly - as an indicator, my cap and rotor don't seem to last more than 10k (and i am not the only one)

I do apologise for sending the detailed data. Others seemed to find amusement in the fact that people kept such records. I knew about 0.003 seconds after I sent it that there would be someone who didn't share the wonder of the detail. I can, unfortunately, be prodded into being inebriated with the exuberance of my own verbosity.
