Fuse Box Wiring Harness Ref Photos
#1

Decided to pull the fuse box panel from the 968Cab today to replace the block - PO damaged it and some of the fuse / relay sockets were suspect.

Thought someone might find a photo of the wiring loom plugs useful. Lucky I had a good spare for reference.

DISCONNECT THE BATTERY before playing around with this fuse block - it is direct wired to the +!

Once you open up the fuse box and unscrew the 2 thumbscrews (really tight - use a stubby phillips to loosen the screws). Don't remove all the fuses and relays just yet - a lot easier to replace them one at a time later if you leave them on the board. I removed the large relays at the back closest to the windshield to make it easier to move around - if the loom is stiff, oull gently to move it up at the front and remove the 2 x 5mm allen bolts with the + red wires (make sure your battery is disconnected)

There are 2 plastic plates on the underside of the main panel that you need to slide forward to "unlock" the sockets. Slide about 1.5mm and lift them out. Once freed, you should be able to move the entire block up 6" or more. Dont haul too hard on the wiring loom - but there is enough "give" to get at all the connectors underneath.

Then at the very front - centre of the fuse block, there is a sliding keylock - this will free up all the connectors. pull forward and proceed to slide each connector off the socket - wiggle the connector and try not to pull on the wires - they will all come out.

a la Haynes, installation is reverse of removal. I had to "press" a little harder to reseat the connectors to the new fuse block, but all in all, not too difficult.

BTW - digital cameras are great for working on cars - take a few photos as you go along dismantling things - you'll appreciate it later during reassembly!

Isn't it amazing the amount of wires in that box? <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/blink.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

Looks like an electrically adept squirrel made a nest. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/smile.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

These cars are well engineered, - except they forgot about using relays for fog lights, HL, etc. etc. I've installed a "Iceshark" HL harness in my 951S and was thinking of doing the same for the 968. The access behind the pop up lights looks a little tight however. That harness uses BIG wire to feed power to the HL, FL, etc tapping right off the alternator and using the existing HL circuits to switch relays. Much better than the relatively thin direct OEM wiring setup. I did add a thick groundstrap today from engine to body, so that should help deliver the juice.

But I do like the fact there are 2 buss bars to tap + power at those 5mm allen screws though. Makes it really easy to wire for aftermarket, etc.
