Sorry for the crickets chirping, but most of us have performed the airbox mod (do a search, you'll find plenty of info)...if you still own a 968, why don't you take a few minutes to introduce yourself and your car.

Regards,

Jay

Would there be a slight advantage to this boxless intake approach?

968 crazy - i'm surprised that they gave you grief in stock class - anything forward of the MAF is usually free - what organization?

i didn't want to comment on this, because i knew i was going to get criticized for ruining someone's sale, and i apologize in advance, but i guess it was bound to happen

rhudeboye - the answer to your question is "no" - we tested a nearly identical setup - it works, but the airbox mod worked a bit better - tubing has a measurable restriction per foot and also per bend (you can look it up in), and the air filter is smaller in surface area - that's the sole reason i don't have one of those myself (that and the pain in the butt it is to get to it to clean it)

What company made a CAI (Cold Air Intake) for our cars that is no longer in production? I know Pete used to sell them and still has one. If i remember correctly, It put down 1 WHP more then the Airbox modification. I wanted to get my hands on one, but no luck. Pete has a single unit left, but hes using it on one of his cars.

evo made one - their claims were higher, but in our testing it was lower, which makes sense - you can't get below zero restriction, which is what the airbox has post mod - tubes have restriction - that's a basic law of physics - bends add even more - it's physically impossible for a unit which has known restrictions to be more efficient than something with measured zero restriction - add to that the reduced surface area, and it's pretty simple to conclude that our tests were more accurate than their claims

dyno claims are not as accurate as manometer tests - i tend to think that they failed to account for the intake temp change due to sensor location - we made the same mistake on the first run, and showed over 20hp - once we corrected it, it got accurate

the only way for such a unit to make more power is for the opening to be considerably larger than the exit, and accelerate the air as it goes - but this unit does not do that

it does make power, as do other cone applications, but just not as much as the airbox mod

I race SCCA in BS and we can only use drop in replacements. no one gave me any greif locally but nationally it would be an automatic protest. I'm sick of seeing RX-8's winning when I know M030 968's can kick their ass.

man that sucks - yeah, i can see why you would then remove it

the good news is that the airbox mod will make more power, and should be legal in all classes - done right, it's good for a very real 10 at peak, and a nice bump across the entire curve

the ironic thing is that i'm going to have to completely rethink everything with the supercharger package, and will probably end up with something similar to the cone package

I dont think I can do that in stock class either

i never had issues with that, even in vintage class, which is a LOT more nuts than stock class - i'd look into it - get a steward to sign off on it, and you're golden nationally

welp...i bought this thing. waiting on a shipping quote from the seller :-)

i have a stock airbox, an airbox with the holes drilled in it and now i'll have this CAI as well. guess i'll have to do some testing and stick with what sound i like the best in conjunction with the new chase race stainless exhaust and chip going on.... i don't care about an additional hp gain or loss of one over another, this is not quite a track toy yet...hehe
