Today was the first day of a little trip that was planned to end up tomorrow at RSBarn tomorrow morning for a bunch of fixes. This morning, doing about 70mph on an interstate, I felt a change in handling and immediately concluded that the right rear tire was going flat. Pulled onto the shoulder, and found that I was right. Called AAA, and after waiting a bit decided to start the process of changing to the inflatable factory spare - which I was thrilled to still have in the trunk (subwoofers be damned!). The scissor jack (my addition) worked well, the car cover that happened to be in the trunk gave me a clean work area, and I got the wheel off just as AAA showed up. The tire was totally destroyed! The mechanic told me it was good that I had gotten as far as I had, as he is - get this - not allowed to change tires on Porsches. He's only allowed to tow them (he was driving a flatbed tow truck). So, I asked him if he was allowed to put air in the spare - which he did. Then, after I got that on the car, he lowered the jack (I have to get a new handle - this one stinks!), helped put the flat in the passenger seat (on the car cover!), and followed me a short distance to make sure everything was well - which it was. Then I called Pete and he found a new tire of the same type and size, so it'll be at the Barn tomorrow for me.
The question - what would those of you without a spare have done? Without a spare, you'd have to be towed. With a tire that couldn't be repaired, you'd have to purchase a new tire. The odds of finding a match near the shop to which you were towed would likely be slim. What would you do?
I know I'm not ever giving up the spare!
