Friend's wife backs into my 968
#1

Talk about rotten luck on an otherwise perfect summer day. I was assisting my buddy in cutting down tree limbs when his wife runs up to me in a panic saying that she backed into my car. What could I do? The damage was done. Just rotten bad luck.

I had parked in their double wide driveway well away from danger, or so I thought. It's not difficult to see a Guards red Porsche. What happened was as she was backing out, the car "disappeared" in her mirrors. Next thing you know, the Santa Fe is rubbed up side by side with my car. She was so mortified and in a panic that she just left it there thinking that she would do more damage if she moved it. I moved their vehicle out of the way and looked at my car. The driver's side was black with tire marks so we quickly cleaned it up and assessed the real damage.

Scratches on the front fender, multiple ripples on the door, scratches on the rear fender, driver's mirror folded in to the side glass and the side skirt in one piece but displaced. So over to the body shop I drive for a review and estimate and then contact both insurance parties.

Over $7500 damage. The real problem was finding a replacement door as this one has too many internal structures to make new again. Lots of 924 and 944 doors on the internet throughout North America, but no 968 door. Finally the body shop ordered a 1995 968 door from Europe. Now I have to wait 30 days for it to be shipped. My only major concern is that the body shop repaint the parts to match the existing colour. Fortunately the paint does look brand new even after 18 years. It was well taken care of.

Being a low red sports car, it's amazing how many times I've been cut off or pulled in front of. I wonder if other 968 owners experience this too.

So a word to the wise: always be cautious wherever you go and don't take anything for granted, parked or while driving.

Happy and safe driving.

oof - bummer - been there - red is one of the hardest colors to match (white is actually the worst). they'll likely have to shoot half the car to blend it in.

The nature of these SUVs I'm afraid. I heard that the US DOT is going to require back up cameras on all cars soon because rearward vis is so bad.

If people would learn to drive, they would not need backup cameras. I have had trucks and suv's for years - I drove delivery box trucks and ambulances for years and never hit anything.

Sucks, but know how you feel. I got rear ended in my 86 911 (red) about six weeks ago. 07 328 hit me going 40 mph. I was nearly stopped when she hit me, pushed me into oncoming traffic, I got control of the car and avoided hitting anyone else, very scary. I saw the whole thing coming in the rear mirror, and couldnt believe she wasnt stopping. Her car was totaled, she got a wreckless driving ticket and was 100% at fault.

Amazingly, I had no mechanical damage and drove it home. The rear bumper needs to be replaced, need new muffler and rear quarter needs work, but not much more. total bill will still exceed $10k. I will say that a 911 is a very very solid car despite its size.

One thing I now have to deal with is filing a diminished value claim. My 911 is nearly show quality and was extremely clean. Now the car fax will show an accident and I have to try to determine how much value was lost. Anyone have any thoughts how to do this? I figure somewhere between $4-$8 k lost.

Sorry to hear. And if the heartache wasn't enough the parts not easily available ( and sometimes NLA at all ! ) just compounds the frustration . Bummer indeed.

A later model 944 door is a direct bolt up and fit. I just installed one on my 968 coupe. Exact door but......... you have to enlarge the oblong hole to a round hole for the power mirror plug to fit. Also need to drill 2 new screw holes for the door panel plus drill a hole to mount the plug for the lighted door knob connector.. I picked up a passenger and driver door with power windows plus 2 seats for $200 on Craigslist.

Sorry to read of your event hopefully they can fix it like brand new. I don't know about red 968's but this past Saturday I was dead stopped at a red light and a women bumped me from the back. Lucky for me she wasn't going fast no damage but it was upsetting.

Bummer about your car. I can relate. Mine's Red and essentially perfect. To me it's almost a like a piece of art.

Related disease, women in SUV's pulling up 6 inches behind me on steep hills. Not that some men don't do this, but it keeps happening to me. When I see them coming, I even roll the car back a bit while their coming up the hill. Mostly oblivious and can't wait to get to the next text message.

Question: what color was the box you buried her in?

Having been hit three times from behind by distracted drivers ; once while at a stop light , another while coming to a crawling stop on the highway, and the last while the car was parked in front my house at night ( in all three cases my cars were totaled , but lucky two were MBZs and one 944..and lucky I wasn't totaled, lol..not even a bruise actually ) I am now so overly cautious ( aka paranoid ) I get on that horn and hold firmly for a few seconds the moment I notice any car approaching either too fast for my comfort ,or, the driver appears to be texting, talking, or doing anything aother than paying undivided attention to what's in front of them. You'd be surprised how many are startled awake and have that " uh, what's happening ?! " look on their idiotic faces. But it sure makes them pay attention !

Dan - I think I'll start adapting your approach. I wonder how much trouble it is to put horn on the back of the car.

Why put a horn on the back of the car? A shot gun is much more effective on tailgaters. I'm very tired of rice rocket drivers sitting on my tail. The Subaru WRX drivers are the worst.

Derailed - there is a pretty good US top gear where the Jersey guy (name escapes me) builds his dream car. One option is to shoot dead squid at the tail-gating car behind him. Pretty funny. His best idea was to put on a super loud horn on to interrupt the phone conversation of the slow guy in the left lane.
