Freak snowstorm
#1

I was away on business till early yesterday, when I flew back & headed to the office in the rain with the 968. Left work at 5pm and drove thru the downpour - started up the mountain enroute to my house when I hit a wall of cars stopped dead in a winter wonderland of snow / slush / sleet / icy roads. No exit and no choice but to come to a stop on a steep incline, sharply banked on several corners: not a happy place to be driving on summer Dunlops at 38 psi. It was a struggle to start and banked curves in 1st gear tugged the car towards the enbankment. I have no idea how I made it. I never got out of 3rd gear but plowed thru the snow and finally made it home in 2.5 hrs (typically a 25 minute drive. as of today, snow is completely gone, but the 968 is tucked away scared. I am still in awe how the car maintained some degree of traction on what was basically studded snow tire-worthy road conditions.

Stew,

Glad you made it home OK.
I heard the roads got pretty bad up there on Tuesday.

I've had a few similar white knuckled experiences. One time in particular when I also was away and had to drive home from the airport late in the evening with an unexpected snow storm.
That's why I got a set of all-seasons which do OK in the snow.
My plan for next year is to get another set of wheels with some snow tires to use for the winter, but a friend sent me this link a few days ago.

Interesting option for just the scenario you described.

I was convinced I was going to take a few cars out with me as I climbed uphill at 0.5 mph with the car at a 45 deg. angle and not wanting to stop but having to. It was a 2+ hr white knucker to be sure, that I never want to repeat. Those spikes look like just the ticket, but you have to understand that as I left the office, it was just rain and 40 deg. - just 2 miles uphill and it was below freezing, in blinding snow, driving uphill on sheer icy roads and no way to go back: I was committed once I was halfway up the mountain. Obviously there was no snow removal or salt present because the forecast was for lite showers and 45 deg. Weatherman must be the ONLY job that pays well and you don't have to be right every time. How far are you south of me( Wilkes-Barre area) are you?

Stew,
I'm in the western burns of Philly, but have family not too far from you near Hazleton.
The weather there is pretty similar to where you live.

I'm actually in White Haven, about 30 mins from Hazleton. We'll have to share a few hockey sodas the next time you come this way.
