i think i'm still missing something here - i think somebody needs to show me this stuff and what it can do
Look at any other leisure activity, card playing, darts, billiards etc. Why do people do them?

A. Fun and entertaining

B. as you hone your skill it only gets more enjoyable.

If you watch it I'm guessing it will appeal to you, however if you just try and dive right in your more then likely going to find it pretty hard and not want to give the effort.

Now I’m sure to get blasted for this one. I went to a driving range with a good friend and for the life of me, I couldn’t stand it for more then 10 minutes. He however was so into it. Correcting his slice and so forth. Now I don’t mind playing a few holes, if you call what I do playing, but standing in the same spot just swatting a ball over and over. SIGH

Sure I would much rather run my car on a track with no speed limit, but like others I'm not near any tracks. The closest track is probably 3 or 4 hours away and cost a few hundred for few hours of driving. I realize that vid games are far from rush you get from actually driving, but it's nice to walk into the next room, turn on the HDTV and choose from dozens of tracks and dozen of cars.

In the better games you can adjust everything from tire pressure to sway-bars to brake bias etc. etc. I'm a long time gear-head so it's fun to modify different cars and see how they respond. The producers have gone to great lengths to duplicate the dynamics of the actual cars, they even consult the mfg's. In career mode it's much like a real race season where you run in a class based on your car and modifications. If you win races, you win sponsors and money.

It's obvious vid games are not for everyone in fact I dislike the violent shooter games. However the racing simulation games are a nice diversion if the real thing is cost or time prohibitive.

well of course i get all that - no worries guys - i'm not taking shots at you becaue you like this stuff - it just hasn't grabbed me

the things mentioned above also bore me in a very short time (unless there's alchohol involved) - i think for me it's very possibly an adrenaline thing - i like roller coasters but hate ferris wheels - i like being in a fighter, but hate being in a 747 - i love driving on the track, i hate driving to santa monica - i love playing sports, but hate watching them

but i like the idea of being able to tune the car - this could make for a useful tool - pete - i'd like to talk to you about that when you've got a chance

in the meantime, please have fun with the game - technology is wonderful, and if it peaks the interest of anybody in cars and racing, how can it be bad?

I got myself a copy of GTR2, and have been playing around with the Motec data acquisition feature it has. Yikes! This is the kind of stuff I have always wanted to play around with in cars. The motec software comes with a number of sample files, it tracks so many different variables! Heh, although obviously stuff like engine temps aren't available from the game, but a lot of the stuff is there, like tire temps, tire speed, suspension, accelerations, etc. Now all I need is a decent force feedback wheel

Now if I only had the money to get the real Motec equipment, lol. But I think I'll stick with g-tech

I know Forza does some data acquisition too, but it's all confined to the xbox. I don't think there is a way to retrieve it, much less make it usable in this type of software. It would be cool if more simulators did this kind of stuff.
