Just saw my first Cup race at Thundebolt and it was pretty cool. I participated on the DE side of it with just advanced drivers and that was really interesting as some of the Cup guys were out on occasion. Of course it being Thunderbolt brought me some more bad luck and headaches. Last year I blew my engine and this year, again after the second run on the first day, my heater core went. Luckily Max did a bypass and just plugged it up so I was able to run for the rest of the weekend.


Any thoughts on repairing or replacing the heater core? I'm told it's a pain in the ass job! I'm leaning on letting it go and not having heat. I don't use it much at all now, beginning and end of the season on occasion. Somewhat worried about the loss of the defrost though!.


If you've never been to a Cup race and have the opportunity, go. It will give you a whole new appreciation of why we drive our cars. I saw some really tricked out 968's and watched them being driven by some good drivers.

I remember an outing in the NNNJ club where we all went to a body shop located on Route 4 in Fort Lee NJ about 40 years ago. The shop told us that if you hit a deer never tell the cops that the deer was in the road, but lie and say it fell off a truck/car in front of you. Even if it is not hunting season keep to the lie. The reason is a deer flying off a car is considered a missile just like a rock hitting your car is a missile, and would be covered under your comp insurance while hitting a deer in the road is considered driving to fast for road conditions and may not be covered.

Well the choice is getting coverage with no bad mark against you or putting in a collision claim which they may or may not cover. It's your decision. We were also told if you are driving on a race track, there is no coverage, if there is an incident but if you can get the car off the track, and say put it into the woods saying your tire blew, then there would be coverage. I agree it is fraud but why the insurance companies make it this way I do not understand?

Bad advice all around on the insurance front. With the deer, you cansay the deer ran into me (almost always the truth) rather than you hit the deer. On the track, its more serious: you have to tell the truth. Taking the car to a different scene is fraud; being honest isn't. I've seen many cars covered after DE incidents although more and more insurance companies now have language that excludes DE (and anything that goes on near or around a track). 

 

Your mother was right: always tell the truth...

Many drivers , myself included, buy specific car insurance coverage for accidents on the track. William your reasoning is a one way ticket to jail and heavy fines. What do you think, you can really hoodwink an insurance company? They have seen every type of scam imagine able and can smell a skunk a mile away!

Is anyone else doing the DE with Schattenbaum at NJMP Thurs and Fri?  Happened to be going in for an alignment and heard about it.  Hadn't been to the track in awhile, and the car is ready...  If I'm not flying I'll sign up for the Nov event as well.

I am going to the track, but on the 9th with Jeff Caldwell and Jeffapolooza (8 hours of open track, and passing).  I was going to do the Schattenbaum event, but am flying on the 7th.  We'll have to get together at an event next season.

 

What run group are you running?

Great day at the track yesterday.  I'm always pleasantly surprised the way this car can keep up with the newer cars.  I took me four tries to get by an E46 M3 yesterday... I'd get even in the corner start passing at track out then he would "beat" me down the straight.  He finally figured it out and let me go... Never saw him again that session.  I guess being down about 100 hp is a big deal.

 

As much as I love this car, I may transition to a dedicated track car.  The compromises in safety gear give me pause.

Saturday was a rainy day so I did one lap and retired for the day. Hoosiers don't work well in the wet. Sunday was cold but sunny and a great track day to end the season. Event was well attended and had a blast!
