for once I get lucky
#1

I've had a three plus year saga trying to save a cracked cylinder wall block. It's been a real learning experience. That's all been covered in other threads, and I'm not giving up on that...yet.

In any case I decided to have a Plan B because I would like to be driving my 968 again some year. So I started to see if I could buy another motor. On the Pelican Parts forum someone had been trying to sell a complete motor for a few months. The pictures looked good as did the price. We exchanged a couple of emails including my requesting the serial number. After a little negotiating, I sent a certified check to a guy in New Mexico I didn't know, and crossed my fingers.

He didn't get it shipped right away so I did start to get nervous, but it did finally show up. I am very happy.

It's a true '94 engine with the 2R rods. I just finished the disassembly, and here's what I found. The belts and water pump have definitely been changed. I can't be sure if the cam chain and phenolic blocks have been changed. They're in good shape so maybe the cams have been off, but maybe not. I am certain the head has never been off. I am certain the oil pan has never been off. The bores are perfect without the tiniest scratch or measurable wear. The rod and main bearings are worn, but not excessively, and there are no scoring marks.

I got everything from the air box to the exhaust manifold. I got the cross member, alternator, A/C compressor, oil cooler and hoses, torque tube, bell housing, DMF, wiring harness, both computer boxes still mounted on the footwell plate, and new distributor, rotor, cam chain, valve cover gasket and some other odds and ends.

The only down side is that the engine had been outside for awhile apparently. All the exterior aluminum is dirty and oxidized.

So I threw the dice and lucked out this time. I've got it apart now and will do some cleaning. Beyond that I don't know what I'll be doing with this, but what the heck. I'm a 968 nut.

Merry Christmas!
