fuel gauge
#1

my fuel gauge has never worked quite right.

i yanked my i.p. to clean up all the contacts and change bulbs.

i noticed that there are adjustable resistors on the fuel gauge and the voltage gauge. i adjusted the voltage gauge so that it should be accurate now.

but the fuel gauge.... is there a way to check it to see if it's working right? i know that cleaning contacts will help, but i'd hate to re-install the whole dash and then find the gauge isn't accurate or needs to be adjusted and have to start all over again.

i priced out a new gauge and it's pretty expensive.

i'm guessing that resistor needs to be dialed in somehow, but i don't know where to start.

any help would be greatly appreciated!

Explain the problem a bit further. Does it not go up to the top line when full? Join the club. Any other problem behavior?

sometimes goes all the way up. but not normally.

most of the time sticks at 3/4 until empty, then pretty accurate for bottom 1/4.

mechanically, the needle moves very freely.

i will say that the gauge worked much better after cleaning the ground points and replacing the battery and cables.

i was hoping that there was a simple way to test the gauge since it's out to see if it is defective.

my only other thought was to replace the sender in the tank. and it's pretty expensive.

there is that adjustable resistor on the gauge. i can't help but wonder if it might be able to help.

there was a post here a few weeks ago about fixing the volt gauge with that resistor. i tried it on mine, and it worked.
