If I could get a body shop to make my car look exactly like that photo( the latest version, without the large rear spoiler/tail ), with the quality of work being nothing short of factory finish appearance and function, I would gladly pay the equivalent of another 968 coupe's market price simply for that conversion.. but I doubt there is any way that result can be attained
Anything is do-able, just how good you want the result will be directly reflective of how deep your pockets are. lol. It is amazing just how the front brings the car up to contemporary standards. The inherent body shape is still relative. If you took some of the skills that were put into the freaky red thing that started this thread and modified them to include a small but important part of the whole, which is 'taste' then I think something wonderful could be done. We just need some very wealthy fan of our cars to take the plunge. Love to see it.

I tip my hat to the guy who made this happen. Like or dislike, it had to take some serious time and effort. I would buy him a beer and listen to that story any day! (And if he managed, somehow, to stay married through the project, then another round on me!) Also, i would love to see what is under the hood.

The aesthetic of the 968 is "frozen in time", for Porsches anyway. Sitting next to 2007 models, some people still wonder if it is new. Many people have been dumbfounded when I tell them my car is 15 (really 16) years old. Think of how many cars from 1992-1995 really are history. Gone and forgotten. A long list of makes and models for sure. But not the 968.

Anyone know the owner, or the location of the car? Love to get a closer look...

Yes I have to agree with you here on all points. My only variance is that I actually prefer the look of my 951 than the 968 from most angles. I know this may be blasphemy on this site but I did say 'most angles'. Nevertheless the family of front engined, water cooled Porsches never got the recognition that they deserved and even nowadays in my local Porsche club we still hear 'Get a real Porsche' and it's only half joking. Little do they realise that this is just red rag to a bull and more reason to hunt them down and humiliate them on the track and hillclimbs. lol

I too like the green photoshopped car. If someone could contact better bodies in san diego, or ma shaw, tell them to make the 993 fenders to work on a 968, I am sure they could mock it up. Cost is what the factors will be in how many sets they make for resale. I would love to get a new front end on my 968, and always wanted the fixed headlights of the 993.

Regarding cost, does anyone know the price of those Carrera GT headlights ? When we were at the German Autofest in Ventura a couple of years back the dealer that brought the GT for show and tell mentioned the cost of a single roof panel ( IIRC there are two of those ) to be $ 25,000. I would not be surprised if the set of headlights might cost $ 10,000. Leaves very little $$ from my theoretical budget for the rest of the conversion

Our cars are beautiful, no argument there. However I’ve notice that, at least in the DC area, people seem to be a bit ignorant when it comes to cars.

i.e. I was at the car show earlier this month and was amazed at how many people couldn’t identify an Elise. The Vanquish got the same response. I know the manager of the dealership that had the exotics there, so he and I talked for about 20 minutes. As I stood there I keep hearing the mumbles, from men and woman, saying, "Wow! What is that?" "Ohh look, another concept car." It was down right sad. There was an episode of Top Gear were Clarkson (grain of salt, I know) stated that people in the US have no idea of what there own cars are, He said this because as he was test driving the Ford GT someone called it a Ferrari.

w/ Porsche people know the current line up pretty well. But pull up in a 68 and people start scratching their head. I rarely have anyone call it a 968.

Greetings to everyone,

I was the person who created the photoshop version of the "2012 968". The color of the 968 I used to mock-up the car was green. I never got to mocking up the back of the car which is something that I might revisit this week. I was looking to create a body kit that would keep the 968 lines but update the look and overall feel of the car. I was not looking to make it look like a 911 or 928 but rather an update to the 968 styling.

The image that I see of the "red" 968 in the post does not look like it has been photoshop'd. Who ever did the modification did a nice job of making it look as if it was original. I created the mockup of the 968 because I was looking to have it created in real life through a local body shop. The parts to do this modification are not cheap. The Carrera GT headlights alone where about $5-9k not to mention the 997 4s front valance which is another $5-6K, etc. In the end I was quoted somewhere in the $25-30k range to get a finished product. This did not include any incidentals or other issues that would more than likely occur in trying to make this a reality. I am just glad to have a photoshop version that I like and feel continues the 968 heritage.

Hey thanks for the trouble. It seems that most people like it. I know I do. It's a shame that it'll never become reality but it's a great indication of what might have been. If you have time, do a rear mockup and give us something else to talk about.
