Finding good conrods at a decent price
#1

Engine out, want to change the Con rods. Many choices around, any recommndation? Mainly to prevent problems rather than increasing performance. The best deal I found so far was a set of Pauters for 1092 USD.

I know your car is probably under more stress than mine so you will want higher end rods but here's my 2 cents worth. If you have a 92 or 93 then you don't have the forged rods from Porsche. Since I am putting in the SC and doing a rebuild for fun/longevity I bought a set of used forged rods from 928Motorsports for 100.00. They had 2 sets when I got mine about a month ago and they looked perfect when they arrived. That being said my P-mech friend will actually decide if they ARE perfect before they go in.

If you get any used ones I would have them checked for hairline cracks. I forget the process name, but they are dipped in UV dye and looked at under black light. If there are any cracks they will show.

These are 951 rods, I hear you need to modify them.

Second question is hhow important weight of the rods are.

Are you referring to the rods I bought? 928MS told me they were direct replacement for the 968 rods. Now I must check, you have me worried a bit as I don't want to mod an important part like a con rod.

somehow that would not surprise me - there have been other incorrect assumptions from there about the 968 being the same as other stuff

Off topic a bit.

Just had a look at the 928 site and the rods I bought are listed as:

Good Used Forged 968/S2 Con Rods

Porsche Part Number 944 103 111 1R - S5

www.928motorsports.com/parts/used_connecting_rods.php

If they were pulled from a 968 or S2 I can see no problems, what identifies these as 951 by sight?

I will check PET for each model, 968, 944 S2 and 951 to see if I can find a commonality in part numbers. Not quite sure where to start my quest to assure myself of compatibility if that fails.

Torbjorn - set of Pauter rods for 968 on eBay right now for <500.00 brand new.

Yes, those, Pete at RS Barn guesses that the conversion/refurbishing is 400 USD. I do not have a clue about engines but it is a bushing that needs to be replaced and studs (APR?) that somehow needs to be fixed. I will back out and get new conrods. Best deal I have found so far is Pauters at 1092 USD. Will get onto Ebay!

I am not sure if cross posting is allowed here (I doubt it) but that's what the moderators are for Flash do what you will with this but this RL link talking about the conrods I just bought is so scary I'm not sure if I should laugh or feel sick. I will probably have to try and get a refund. Quotes from the seller are almost hysterical like "Just my luck they are "mystery rods"

unless somebody already changed them, according to the number, like most of us, you have early rods
