Finally Got a New Toy
#1

No, not the Ferrari....THE LIFT!!

9000 lb version with the extra 2 foot extension so I can also get my trucks and vans on it. Got a great deal including delivery and installation and it's in super condition, just needs a little cleaning up.

Wish my shop had a ceiling that high. I take it, this is not at your home. I have a Bend-Pak mid-lift, but it sure beats jack stands.

Correct, not at my home. I have a 1500 sq ft unit at an industrial complex that I use to store my cars (since I don't have a garage) and run my part time detailing business...it's 3 doors down from my full time electronics business, so as much time as I spend between the two shops, I guess it really is my "home"! i've been giving a LOT of thought lately to getting a large facility so i can have a couple of lifts in there, and store my cars - i'm actually working on a business plan to see if i can make it work

I have an "undersized" 2-car garage (about 19' x 19' usable) with only a 10' ceiling. No can do a lift unfortunately. Those with lifts make me jealous!!! Congrats Darryl - looks great!

Flash - hire me, I can be your Northeast Sales Rep! I'm cheap- just can't fly!

there's always the digging option.. but then there could be plenty of issues there as well, and more limiting in terms of what you can do vs. a hoist..

yup - looking at one right now - i just need to check out my slab, make sure it's thick enough, and then figure out where the tension cables are so i don't drill through them

Yup- just found one - "MaxJax" by Dannmar. Looks pretty cool! Not to keep making excuses as to why I can't have a lift (can't get one anyway due to lack of funds to begin with...), but I do believe my garage slab is not thick enough. I'd have to dig out and pour some suitable footings. Not gonna happen, at least not in my current house.

Both the Mrs and I would love to move into a larger house (with a 3-car, or at least a 2-car attached and enough, suitable land for a large 2-car detached). But that my not happen in the near future!

Yes, tension cables are dangerous....makes the idea of a two post lift scary. I think I'm going to try the costco 4 post lift....I think they're around $1800 or so.

BTW, my ceiling is only ~9'6". I could still stack two 968's with a four post.

Rustech, Flash or anyone: Please explain tension cables and how they relate to car hoists.... I know nothing about lifts and such.

The Ferrari is a customer car I'm working on. Long story but I'll super condense it:

Guy bought car...has no garage...found me via Craigslist last August...pays me monthly to keep it here. Met a mechanic a few weeks ago...needed belt service (much the same way our cars do) and decided to pull the engine to fix a bunch of leaks, new clutch, etc...decided to clean up the paint during the "down time". Car had a pretty bad respray upon purchase and I'm basically finishing the painters job of wet sanding and leveling the orange peeled clear coat that was put on too thick, too fast, and never sanded.

If you look real close in the photo, you'll see the sanding line on the passenger rear qtr where I left off. As of Monday evening, the whole car is now wet sanded and I'm beginning the compounding and polishing process. The engine lid is done since I was able to do that while it was removed from the car. The mechanic and I put the engine back in last night after a couple hours worth of degreasing. You can see the engine sitting on the floor. He will be reconnecting everything while I finish up the paint correction as the owner has a trip planned to South Carolina for 4th of July.

maxjax is the one i am looking at

the tension slab is one with cables poured into it, designed to hold it together - they do this is areas where ground slipping is common, or if you are built on a hill or slope

...or if your house weighs xxxxxxtons. They are cables with pvc sleeves poured into the slab. Once the slab has cured, they tighten them up on the edges of the slab. This adds a great deal of strength and helps distribute the loads applied to it. Also helps prevent the slab from cracking. Usually the garage floor will be stamped somewhere "tension slab...don't drill...etc".
