Nothing to do with a 968!
#1

Sorry, I know this is totally off topic but its technical in nature and COULD apply to our cars. Although in my case its a Nissan Xterra I'm thinking about. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/smile.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

I've got a stock fog light switch and stuff that I want to use for some aftermarket lights. I also have ripped out the fog lights. So I'm wondering, can I just wire the aftermarket lights up to the existing fog light wires somehow, so that the stock fog light switch will control them? Does that make sense?

Figure this is an easy question for you electrical geniuses...can I just plug right into those existing wires, or are the fog lights low voltage or something and the wires won't have enough power to run some really heavy duty KC type lights?

You should be able to use the stock wiring to run your KC's, but you will need to check out the amp rating of the fuse first. There should be a dedicated circuit for the stock fog lights. Find that at the fuse panel and see what amp fuse is in there. Now compare that with the fuse requirements of the KC's. If the stock circuit is a 10 amp, and the KC's need a 15, then I think you could just bump the fuse up. If the difference is any greater than 5, I would say you will need to run a relay to switch the higher current and run a separate power circuit.

you will also need to check the guage of the wire - 15 amps needs a heavier guage than 10, depending on the distance of the wire - if the wire is at least 14 guage, you should be ok at 15 amps - 20 amps needs 12 guage - for example, kc daylighters 150W need 12 guage each - piggybacking from one to another bumps that up to 10 guage to the first light and 12 from there to the second

If the amperage / wattage of the new lamps is much more than the originals, you could use the existing wires down to the lamps and install a relay at that location to the new lamps. Less high amperage wire to run under the hood, you don't have to change anything in the dash. Make sure you use a fuse or circuit breaker near the battery.

One wire at a time and its easy. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/wink.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />
