Exhausting question- B&B, RS Barn, CarGraphic ??? What to do???
#21

Rutger,

The Cargraphic system is a beautiful piece that really doesn't match the dynamics of the stock system .

The stock system has an amazing restriction to enhance the effect of the wild cam changes due to the variocam. I have several dyno sheets to prove this. The B&B also has some of these effects.

The Cargraphic has several dips and gains over stock and others. It's just not very consistant.

I've tested so many options and they all have positives and some have lots of negatives.

I know my system has most of the gains without the losses.

I am looking for a balanced and overall gain.

My dyno testing has two measuring sticks. Overall and average gains. We realy look at the avg gains as the most important.

I'm always available to discuss.

Pete

Has anyone taken a db meter to the RS barn system? I don't expect just changing the catback would make it too loud but I would still like to be able to have a conversation with the top down.

Anyone live in\around NJ that has one? Maybe I can hear it?
I just bought a B&B new for $725 and am quite happy with it. Sounds great without being annoying.
Hi, may I ask where you sourced this for $725?

Thanks.

Hi Direwolf, yes i have a decibel reading for the rs barn system, although mine is a track car and i have the headers and no cat, just a rear silencer and it reads 109db at 5000 rpm to loud for the tracks over here in the UK, going to have to get another box put in this coming month, but overall its a cracking exhaust, the headers are a work of art and really let the car spin up a lot faster than standard out of turns, this was noted by a friend of mine who has a fast 968, imo go for it you cant go wrong, regards chris.

Thats for the reply Pazzer, chances are I won't be doing the header, just the cat back. Performance wise I don't care if I gain anything, as long as there is no drop in power. I think the stock 81db is just too quiet for a sports car.

Anyone else that can give me an idea of how loud the RS barn catback is? Is it too loud to have a conversation or listen to the radio (with the top down)?

I have the cat back on my cab...it is definately not too loud to listen to the radio etc. In fact, I am more interested in adding a windscreen to deflect noise than making changes to the exhaust. I would let you hear mine live, but you'd better do it soon, before the header goes on

I live in Bucks County, PA, right near RS Barn...I have limited time, but I'm always willing to loan my car to Pete if you happen to be coming this way.

Regards,

Jay

My wife likes the RSB cat back on her car and she would not be happy if it was overly loud. It adds a nice tone and growl to the car under acceleration and deceleration but no loud drone while cruising.

On the subject of exhausts - I was thumbing through my historic maintenance paperwork and found out that my catalyst had been removed (yes I have now checked under the car and confirmed!). Seems it was replaced with another muffler. Not having seen a 968 system before I can't comment as to whether the rest looks standard but would imagine it is. Here in NZ it's not mandatory to have a cat on a car of my age (92) and the emissions tests are nothing to what i experienced while living in California. But will its deletion have caused a drop in performance. I guess it has more to do with whether the back pressure is still the same eh?

It certainly sounds good!

since i don't know what they put in its place, i can't say for sure what the result is, but there is torque loss with just a cat removal - pretty messy actually - it took me 4 different cats to finally get one that seems to work - i can't begin to tell you what a pain this has been for both pete and myself, as we sift through combinations and permutations of systems in search of the perfect one

i'd still like to be able to refit the oem cat

I've got the B&B and I really like the sound. Nice deep throat without being too loud.

Thanks Flash,

Without a lot of mucking about I guess I'll never know. When the muffler needs replacing it will be back to the cat then. If I need to pawn my grandfathers war medals for the oem cat what's the next best bet?

Ha, I found the old videoclip of my car ( with the BB catback ) which was loaded on YouTube by the author of the film ,my friend Trevor ( aka PorscheG96 ) . You must turn the sound all the way up, this was taken on an early generation cell phone, so the mic quality is no way near today's standards, no surrounding sound elimination editing , yada , yada.. and the clip is extremely brief, but I think worth a listen.. IIRC, was passing by at WOT, about 5500 rpm in third gear, and shifted into fourth as he clip ended a second later..

Enjoy.. Sound is subjective :-)

I'm eagerly awaiting the day my exhaust to fall of due to rust. So I can convince myself to be needing a new shiny one!

If they put salt on the streets to melt the snow , that new exhaust time will come sooner than you think. The main reason I was able to afford a Maserati Merak when I lived in Cleveland was the salt's affect on cars - that poor thing was rusted so badly in just seven years of its existence before I bought it , that you could ( seriously ) push your finger though most of the exhaust and the floorboard of the car and make a hole in it. Brings down the resale value very fast :-( :-)

That aside...what, no one yet chiming in to say that after listening to the clip you've come to the realization that this 4 cylinder makes Ferraris , Boss 302s, 427 Cobras Shelby, Aston Martins and even all Formula 1 cars sound kinda' wimpy ?! Y'all are hurting my feelings ! :-) :-). But on a serious note, and with the understanding that sound is definitely subjective, I have not heard a single six cyl car whose exhaust note I like ( the closest one might be the Infinity G35 or 37 S ) more than my 968 with the BB on it , and I have not heard a 12 cylinder car ( with the possible exception of the DB9 ) that sounds better than most 8 cyl cars. To my ears there a dynamic tone emitted by 8 cyls that translates to sound perfection. And to some extent that applies to driving sensation as well - there is just something special about 8 cyls that IMO is missing in any other configuration, smaller or larger number of cylinders .

My g37sx doesn't sound as good as your car or mine. Why do you drive so slowly? Your car would have sounded even cooler if you had been going fast!

Well, at about 7000 rpm ( when I had the old Speed 6 racer X chip ) the sound was amazing .. I used to love driving it through tunnels keeping it near the rpm redline , you'd swear a Ferrari or a Lambo was going through there :-) :-) .
