End of this phase of 968 ownership
#1

Not sure yet what will replace it.  But it is sold, and just plain had to let it go.

Been driving it for 13 years, bought it with 122K miles in 2006, and now over 200K (estimated since odometer broke a few years ago at 184K).    It was already in only fair condition then, PO had an accident, some other goobers, paid only $9,000 back then.  I was seeking a driver anyway.

And the water pump failed a couple of months ago, and needs belts, front oil seals, and really needs cam chain pads replaced, and fix the sunroof, and temp gauge, and air conditioning, and has hatch delamination, and drivers seat recovered, and has some clear coat failing, and new speakers, and a headlight fix, and a cracked driving light, and probably a Tiptronic service, and the tip manual mode stopped working, and wheels refinished, and at least 4 times had panel repray (which is really obvious in Polar Silver), and new tires, and probably should redo the head, and  ...... well the list went on and on.  And a salvage title -- my son drove it in a ditch in 2008, I wrote all about that here on the forum.  In other words, this was not the right 968 to keep investing in.

So I sold it to a dismantler.  Hey look, a 968 with salvage title, over 200K miles, and Tiptronic if it was in very good condition might sell for .... what?  Maybe $7-$9K if I am lucky.  It was time to let it go.

I have enjoyed a different kind of experience with Porsches, for over 30 years now, than many 968 owners.  Many of us keep them pristine, and keep all service up to date, and maybe drive on the weekend a bit.  Mine were all daily drivers, heck I raised my kids in the back seats of a few of them.  So my style has always been drive the heck out of them, enjoy driving every day, and could never come to terms with garage queen Porsche.  So I admire all of you who keep your 968s in excellent condition.

Lastly I have really enjoyed this forum, thanks to everyone for making it a great place and giving me so much support..  I got to meet many of you at the fun runs we had with Flash in Orange County, and Joe did one here in San Diego.  And also enjoyed the "current events" topics where we got to argue a bit about non-car stuff;  that was good and I think actually deepened the bond among forum members.

I still have the VW Vanagon Syncro (which I will never ever sell) and the 2002 911 C4S which are both great cars.  But I am keeping my eye out for something to replace the 968, and yes I am window shopping for another 968 as a replacement.

So this is only "so long for now", and I may be back with another 968.

Good for you. Sounds like you gave it a good life. I appreciate and agree with your philosophy on cars, from one daily driver to another.  Big Grin

Nothing wrong with downgrading from a 968 daily driver to another daily driver...for a change of pace . I downgraded from mine to a Maserati GTS . ;-) But in my case I still have my main 968 ...and always will . Hope some day you will get back into / return to the ownership of another 968 as well . These are phenomenal cars IMO .

In the meantime, please do stay as active as you can on the Forum, your contributions are always appreciated !

All the best ,

Dan

Well, I am not sure I should be allowed to remain.   After all........ I killed one, I slaughtered a 968, only a dead corpse remains, the blood (coolant) has drained out, nothing but a decomposing shell is left, the soft tissues are now falling apart, all kinds of foreign agents are attacking the structure, the skin is failing, body serum (oil) is dripping in a vile pool of nastiness, various living 968s are calling the graveyard to grab body parts.  Can you imagine something so horrific!  No.... No....  we don't want this guy around anymore.

However, I do recall trying to add some DIYs and sharing my experiences, and the forum has been a place I checked a few times a week, and that will continue.  I'm also available to offer guidance on issues like sexuality, race, politics, religion, immigration, gun control, taxes, climate change, human behavior, nationality, and more -- but I think I may have worn out my welcome on those topics!  :whine:

Dan and I always welcome a counterpoint to our opinions. Some one has to be there to rein him in. I mean us. If you had seen my dead corpse which lives on today in two cars you wouldn’t feel as bad. If you do at all! Your voice will always be appreciated.
