sounds like.....threshing machine
#1

oil in water (for a long time)...ran hot ...clogged radiator...cleaned out.. wrench #1 said blown head gasket, I disagreed.
he said he put two O rings in oil filter housing???
wrench #2 said bad noises coming from area of oil pump, not familiar w/ 968 take elsewhere.saiad he put in a new thermostat.
wrench #3, best in area said he didn't have time to mess with it,
sell it for parts! towed home to sulk. sat for three months or so...have Italian disease " fundsalow".
wrench #4 made a house call. car turns over but won't catch...diagnoses (no strange noises at this time) computer.. thru "Excellence" found local guy in Lauderdale who repairs and guarantees for 5 years for $400. do it to it
put rebuilt ECU in on Fri 27Nov. after putting front end stuff, hoses, plastic stuff etc. and hooking up new ECU, it started on first turn of the key, BUT it sounded like a threshing machine. freaked out. shut off asap... noises seemed to be coming from top end of motor. no oil pressure also.
before I started it up, for some reason I opened the bleeder screw and there was a lot of pressure built up and I had water spraying all over???shut the screw
and turned the reservoir cap and released a lot of air???did the oil/water residue ferment??

What to do??woe is me. Need mucho help
thanks, Tom : onEMT

Tom, the "threshing machine" noise is most likely the hydraulic lifters which will drain down after a prolonged not running period. After running a little while they will build up oil pressure and be as good (and quiet) as new. Residual pressure in the cooling system may not be anything terrible either. Allow it to run a while and bleed it of excess air and it should be good to go. Good luck, Bob Blackwell.

i have had mine sit for extended periods a few times now - it is indeed very common to have the lifters bleed down and make the devil's own racket for a few minutes until they pump back up - very scary indeed - the last time, which was due to an oil hose failing, i thought i had sun a rod bearing - a couple of times it has even required driving to make it happen

first, make sure you have oil in it - sniff the dipstick for signs of coolant or fuel too

also, the sound of the lifters is very loud and rattly and clattery - if there is any rhythmic low knocking sound, stop where you are

but, if that all checks out ok:

then, blip the throttle for a couple of seconds, at 3k the oil pressure should come up

as i said, a couple of times i was unable to get the noise to stop until i drove it - the lifters just didn't want to pump up

and many thanks to Bob and Flash...xoxoxo
now I have to repair the PS high pressure hose.rubber @ reservoir shot! .,,flush the engine , change oil,detail...

Good to know. Seems like 2 approaches to this.

1) don't freak out if you leave the car sit for a long period of time and it sounds like a thresher.
2) DRIVE !

WOW - just read thru this thread and it is good to know that I should NOT let the 968 sit around too long before firing it up and letting it run for a bit. I would have a heart attack if I heard the "threshing machine" noise coming from under the hood!
