DRIVING A WASHING MACHINE!
#1

My car has started to sound like a washing machine on final spin It's speed related and I think it's coming from the left rear but is hard to pin down. I've checked for bearing play, seem ok and changed wheels around but still sounds like the left rear. There is a bit of rotor rub on this corner but the noise seems too loud to be this. Does this ring a bell with anyone?

Sounds like the fabled pinion bearing. Sounds like a fighter jet is coming at you from behind when you are at high speed?

Go about 30-40 in 3rd gear and vary the speed. If you hear the noise (and you can't miss it) you'll need to get it checked.

Search for pinion bearing on this site and you'll see plenty of posts.

Good luck and let us know how it works out.

Hi rxter

Doesn't sound like a fighter jet more of a continuous "bub bub bub" that speeds up and slows depending on speed of car. 80 mph plus is where it sounds like a washing machine at full spin. It seems like I'm getting a "bub" for every wheel rotation. Sound is low pitch with no whine.

Found a thread with pinion bearing audio but couldn't get it to run.

Sounds to me like a wheel bearing or perhaps CV joint...I called Pete to confirm.

I would check those first...if not,

... take it up to 60 mph and lift your foot, if you get an "airplane" sound, that's pinion bearing.

If it is a wheel bearing you will probably to move the wheel back and forth.

Jay

Although I'm a new member... I have to agree with the comments that it sounds like a wheel bearing issue as apposed to a pinion bearing. Moving the tire back and forth isn't always a reliable test. You may need to remove and inspect the bearings, and if you go that far, just replace them anyway.

You might also want to check your rear tire wear. This cars have a tendancy to cup the inside edge of the rear tires if the alignment is off just the least little bit. That results is a thumping sound, the frequency of which changes with rear wheel speed. When the tires are badly cupped the your car will sound like a 4-wheel drive truck.

The pinon bearing failure in my car resulted in a high pitched whine that sound just like a jet engine was sitting in the rear compartment.

In addition to my transaxle noise, I also have the same 'rub' 'rub' noise on each wheel rotation when traveling in a straight line. I think it is the CV joint or wheel bearing on the left side..........

Planning to put in new axles/cv joints, boots and bearings with the trans rebuild......

Crazy,

You can't remove/inspect rear wheel bearings. They are inside rear wheel hub and a bear to take apart/etc

We fight with them to replace. It takes 4-6 hrs to R&R

I've just got back from a test drive after replacing the left rear bearing and I'm happy to say that the noise has gone I followed the instructions here arnnworx.com . I bought the bearing tool and I can't praise it enough, made the job easy!!!

Thanks again for the replies.
