The reason the car goes airborne is part of the danger of open-wheel racing. The flying car overtook a car ahead and ran into the back of the car contacting his front tires with that car's rear tires causing upward flight. Wheel-to-wheel contact almost always turns out bad with formula cars. Even with our vintage formula fords, I know of a driver that contacted wheels and flew over another car in a similar situation braking into a slow corner. It scared him enough to quit racing, but no one was hurt.
