yeah - looked at it - don't like it

prefer this:

back on topic - i think i figured out how to leave the car here and deal with it myself, rather than take it to the showroom.  not a perfect solution, but allows me to maximize the price with less struggle, and i can filter the amount of questions i have to answer, and at the same time do probably the best job of selling it

I know if I were purchasing such a specialized and modified vehicle, I would prefer to deal with the owner and not a salesperson who has to "get back to me" every time I have a question. The way I see it, you will get the same questions, just from a buyer rather than a salesperson who probably knows virtually nothing about the car, and you will make more money in the process. When I sell things that I have a lot of work and effort in, I prefer to get to know the person they are going to. That way I can judge the fit between the item and the buyer. I have refused to sell cars to people who were just the "wrong" buyer. Recently I sold two large commercial sound systems. One went to a novice and it was a pain in my ear handling the endless phone calls. The other went right on the road with a pro and I never heard a word from him.

Sell it yourself, in the end it may be less headache and more money.

after long consideration, and a couple of conversations with a couple of showrooms, that is exactly the conclusion to which i came.

lol - i know exactly what you mean about the sound systems.  i have a long time client with a club for whom i designed and installed a system, and they have been a huge pain for years.  really nice guy, but very frustrating and very high maintenance.

that is another reason that it is probably best that i sell it myself.  because it would not be hard to locate me, if a showroom sold it, they may not tell the buyer everything, and result in a misunderstanding that they may want to seek resolution for from me.  at least this way i can be extremely clear and complete.

Although I agree with all of the "pros" of selling the car yourself ( as opposed to using a dealer showroom ) and while it's most certainly worth a shot trying that avenue first because you have nothing to lose, I don't think you would get even a small fraction of the would-be " real buyers " demographic who typically look to those kind of showrooms for unique cars. Contrary to popular belief, most people trust buying a collector or high end car from a dealership than they do from an individual seller. You may get a million people just browsing at it on eBay but I think in terms of truly interested buyers and the chances of selling it for tne highest price, rests with the dealerships .. I could be wrong, but that's my perception ..

yeah, and if this car were stock, i'd totally agree.  however, since it's so heavily modified, if i were in the market for something like this, unless it came with all the documentation on the modifications, i think i would have a hard time buying a car like this.  yes, i have most everything on everything in the car, but still, i think the dealership would have a hard time translating it.  it would be quite a ramp up.

the only scenario i see working with a dealership selling it is if i made myself available for questions and explanations.  at that point, it takes away a lot of the advantage of putting it there.  of course, they carry financing, which allows them to charge more, and i could still end up with the same price to me, but less work selling it.

i'll put it up and see what happens, and then look into the showroom thing again.  i'm also going to look into the possibility of a referral situation, whereby they get a commission, if they send me a buyer, but the car lives here.

FWIW I agree with your approach to sell it on your own... there are a lot of pluses, not the least of which is your reputation.  The only other solution would be to put it at auction which you're not keen on I realize. So all things considered... fingers crossed.  B)

Flash,

I just noticed some "crazing" on the coolant overflow tank on my 968 and decided to replace it.

A brand new, white tank in there brings up the engine bay quite a bit.

Takes 10 mins.

I would suggest it for you before she goes to the dealership for sale.

Percieved value goes way up.

Brian

I missed your note earlier - we're on the same page on that... I also had this crazy idea that if he did put it at floor auction with a scheduled date etc. you and some others might go along and make a "party" of it...    (but he seems to be in a rush... and it is my experience, that regardless of the price unless its ridiculously low it takes time to sell a car like this.)  I know it would be worth the extra time but... (I've already said too much.)

not so much in a rush, as i just want closure.  also not willing to spend a lot of time on it.  it would be easier to mothball it at a place i already have set aside.

it's leaving my garage no matter what

heck, at this point, i could insure it through haggerty, and drive it into a tree, and do pretty well

E-bay ad...sadly disappointed that there is no mention of Pu$$y magnet strength or number of cup holders, a serious omission in my opinion.

I hope that there will be many embarrassing and potentially libelous questions Wink

Maybe would be good to get it written up at the German Cars for Sale blog (http://germancarsforsaleblog.com/). They feature pretty heavily modified BMWs from time to time, so this might be a way to get interested eyes from a wider community looking at your car.

Well that's about half what I would have put the reserve at... but I was really thinking Mechum's as opposed to e-bay.  I think e-bay is good as a convenience for the buyer but as a sales tool especially for a car, very marginal.  I have a friend that sells rare watches on the internet and mostly its for the advertising value, it draws customers and they can call or e-mail questions. With e-bay there's very little interaction between buyer and seller, and in your case that's a down side.

I wouldn't recommend driving it into a tree as there's the potential for getting splinters and having to explain it to the pretty nurse might be a little embarrassing.
