editing problem resolved - sort of
#1

recently we had a rather unique and troubling problem - a member made a post that was in need of moderation - this has been something that we have been very proud to have only requested one other time in the entire history since we took over the site - the specific content of the post is irrelevant - the post was removed, a note was sent to them, including all of the text of that post, requesting rewording - rather than doing that, the member instead chose to remove the entire content of every one of their posts on the site, including the ones that started some threads

i never expected such a response - i was prepared for a letter calling me a prude, a megalomaniac, telling me to grow up, questioning my parentage, or whatever, but not this - posts on this site belong first to the site, but really to everyone - we owners feel it very important to maintain the archive, and that such behavior is socially unacceptable

deep breath

however, it brought to light a potentially disastrous problem for the site - while this person's posts and threads were of no real consequence or contribution, and life will go on, it could easily have been different

unfortunately i did not catch this, as the member did not post often, until after the automatic backup had expired - those posts are lost forever

as a result, and a temporary solution, i had to suspend the ability of all member to edit posts - some of you experienced this hiccup - then i found out it could be reopened it to Supporters, Boosters, Advocates, Moderators and Sponsors - i felt confident that people in those categories would not do something so egregious as that - i felt that those people could be trusted - they had a vested interest in the site

i also feel that Members deserve to not be penalized for the actions of one individual - consequently i am reopening the ability to edit on a limited basis - that it to say, you have 48 hours to edit a post - after that, it is locked in stone, and you will have to contact a moderator to make edits - Lurkers, Newbies and Rookies will still not have edit capabilities

i am also now archiving the site on a weekly basis, so it will be able to be fully restored if somebody does this again

sorry for the inconvenience - this was a completely unanticipated complication

we will apprise you of any future developments or changes
