DEAD BATTERY!
#1

Worked over the thanksgiving holiday and took the 335i xdrive due to snow. Didn't drive my 94' for a few days, went to fire it up and battery was completely dead. Popped the hood and hooked up the schumacher charger on trickle and on popped the hood light. I was looking for a way to turn off the hood light so it wouldn't be on for hours during the charge when I found it just sitting there out of it's assembly. The two prongs had broke off and it slipped out of the metal clamp that holds it in place. Who knows how long that light was laying there, use the car every day for work but sitting around for a few days, that small light completely discharged the battery. Anyone know where I could order a new one besides my local dealer for obvious reasons.

Funny, the same thing happened to me. Turns out I could just adjust the little trigger arm back into position. I'm not sure how it came out but it completely drained my battery as well. Maybe you can just your arm back into place?

Ha - glad I keep that hood light disconnected. In my case it was because the lamp was so hot it softened and warped the plastic diffuser. Maybe not an original bulb... but I never checked.

Pictures please. I just got replacement lamp housings for my interior and trunk due to warping. Not sure I have ever seen the hood lamp.

I have a couple of warped interior lamp housings if anyone needs them...

Same EXACT thing happened to me. I wasn't so lucky as to see the light illuminated though but the super-efficient dude at Bosch found it in about 5 minutes. Glad you found yours so quickly!

This seems to be a fairly common thing for 968ers.

Nice catch and thanks for the heads up.

Not surprised though. Seems inevitable when you think of the many years of hood slamming.

I ordered LED bulbs for all the interior and hood lamps, they don't get hot and they have a nice glow to them, as well as not using as much power.

Called Superbrightleds.com. They have a good selection of bulbs. Ones for the interior and hood are callrd festoon bulbs. Make sure you measure the ones in the car before you order as they have several sizes.
They also have some additional lighting LED's that may be good to increase lighting under the hood or wherever else.

And as I wrote in the first post, I ordered for ALL interior and hood, which included glove box and hatch lamp, works reaaly well.

Also ordered Led bulbs for brake, turn signals, etc. but forgot to order special flasher for LED's, so blinkers were really rapid and kind of irritating, so I put the regular blinker bulbs back in til I figure up the next order for the Tip and the 951.

Which bulbs did you order, so the rest of use can share in your superior knowledge? I figure a little sucking up is in order for the great idea...

I ordered the 1156 & 1157 bulbs for the brake and turn sinal, and running lights. I ordered the festoon bulbs for the glove box, hatch area, cockpit interior light, and hood lamp. I can't remember the size of the festoon bulbs. You will have to measure them. I believe the interior, hatch and hood lamps were all the same. If you go to the web site, you will see they are numbered....ex. 4211 x6 42 is length in mm, 11 is the metal connector dia in mm, and the x6 is quantity of led's inside bulb. I would get the ones that show a 360 deg. pattern (I got the 120 and had to make sure the bulbs pointed in the right dir.) This was an experiment for me so I did make a couple of mistakes. On the site it tells you to order the same color bulb as the lens, I'm not sure that bright white would NOT work on a red lens, so when I place another order, I will get at least one to try it on the brake lights. Also, you will need to get an electronic flasher relay, they sell them or maybe an auto parts store has them otherwise the blinkers will blink rapidly which was annoying and I am not sure if legal.

There was no pt# on box but the ones I bought show..... 1156-R24 wide 1157-R24 wide 1156-a24 wide
R=red, 24=#of led's wide= wide light pattern.

If I can be of any more help, let me know

I know your all talking lightbulbs now, but next time
someone has a battery drain, check clarks garage.

There is a pretty good write up on how to track it down.

>This seems to be a fairly common thing for 968ers.

I've had it happen at both ends now. I've been having some issues with my (Cab) trunk latching (fixed now, gummed up mechanism) and I left it closed but not locked when I went out of town for a couple of days. I got back and the batt was D.E.A.D. dead. Had to "re-activate" it even to get the charger to start.

Now, two weeks later I left my hood open (without thinking about it) while I worked on my headlight motor issue and airbox mod. Dead again.

I'm going to order the LED's.

What will they think of next? Great find 968 Guy! I only wish I read your post before I traveled to three parts stores to find the correct "under hood compartment" bulb. Strange so many are experiencing warped lenses, I had one too.

Hi,

I have had the same problem - hood light under the bonnet/hood causing the battery to discharge over a couple of days. Light is now disconnected (it was when I got the car - but for some reason I re-connected it. Light is still in place, but wires to the light are left free - problem solved. If I need the light I simply plug it back in.

Don't ask me how the mechanic found this.
