what are you using to hold extra devices?
#1

I have a Motorola Q PDA and I found that if I removed the ash tray module, and fabricated a shelf with leather textured vinyl, I had a nice area to put the phone while driving. Now I have a GPS unit and am wondering where to mount/put it. Several monts ago there was a custom center console that would hold a screen, but I am not that ambitious.

Anyone running a GPS in a daily driver? I would love to see pics or hear suggestions from the forum.

Thanks

Brian

I would love to see pics of your current fabricated Q holder.

I currently have a very small clam shell style phone. I slide open the ashtray and it fits in nice and snug. But come Dec 17th (when my contracts up) Im jumping over to Verizon and getting the Q.

I have a portable GPS that attaches to the front window with a small suction cup. It then sits directly on the dash so it does not shake and wiggle. Works great and is positioned just about exactly where I want it to be in terms of reaching to program it as well as seeing it. My cell phone just sits in the cubby beside the clock. I have Bluetooth so I really don't even need to touch it except to call somebody. I recommend the Bluetooth to anybody who talks a lot on the phone. It's safer but also just more pleasant to use.

Here is the "shelf". Ashtray area.

P.S. The Q will easily fit inside the arm rest cubby. Change the "profile" of the Q to "outdoor" and it is loud enough to hear. It is not difficult to open the cubby and get out the phone when it rings.

It seems as if that area will only work at low speeds as I feel that I would launch the phone everytime I corner.

Need a protective silicon cover. skin tight. costs about $5-10. Just check EBAY.

When you get your Q, log onto EVERYTHINGQ.com

I JUST ORDERED THIS VENT GRIP:

I'll let you know how it work out.

I installed the Motorola Q cell phone into the grip that attaches to the vent louver and I reccomend it.

It sits at the correct hight and is easy to reach. It does not slip off or slide from side to side. There is a small plastic foot that swings out from the base that rests on the dash below the vent for a solid feel when pressing keys while the Q is in the holder. Only negative is the the Q is very close to the holders max. width, so the release button does not allow it to "fall" out easily. It is easy to modify by removing a sliver of the clamping foam on each side but it has not bugged me enough to mess with it.

It is a really nice solution and it will work well for many cell phones and PDA's.

i had that kind of a holder on a flex arm - phone kept landing on the floor - i was using a treo

might have worked on a stock suspension, but in my car a good bump and it was flying through the cabin

still looking for solutions for all 3 cars

i did find some possible solutions here:

flash,

The unit clips to a horizontal vane on the air vents and locks into place. The only way to get it off is to spring open a left and a right hand side clip with a flat blade screwdriver. Even with your suspension this unit will not come off. Sort of reminds me of the clips on the switches in the doors, but way better.

it wasn't the clip falling that was the issue - the danged thing won't hold my phone - could just be the shape of the treo - could be that and the angle of where it was - don't know - just know the kit i bought for the treo sucked, and used the same holder

i'll get around to playing with other stuff as soon as i start driving the car again - may be february though

flash,

the holder has 2 large foam rubber lined holders, one on each side. They can be squeezed together with a ratchet action. It HOLDS!

There is a release button when you want to revove it from the holder.

That sounds like a good solution.

I think I'm going to put a blue tooth head unit in the 68. It came in our new family car as an option and I didnt really care either way as its an auto and picking up the cell, should I need to, is easy enough. However in a manual, were both hands are needed, It would makes life much easier!

yup - same holder - falls on floor in my car

i think the problem may just be the curvature of the treo - there is no front "edge" for the holder to grab - trust me, i would have loved not to have had to go through the incredibly painful process of trying to return 3 of those kits (i bought the nav kits for each car all at once) - i waited long enough to be outside their return policy, but at 250 bucks a crack, i wanted my money back

to be fair though, i did not try it in the other cars - could just be a suspension thing - could be the arm they came on exacerbating the jolt that knocked it out of the holder - no idea - just got tired of it whacking me in the knee on the way down
