Damn you worn 20 year-old plastic parts!
#1

Damn you heater control valve for disintegrating in rush hour far from my home!

And damn you previous owner for not having a tow eye in the toolkit anymore!

And damn myself for never having checked that toolkit in the seven years I own the car!

And, and... Aaaaaaaarghhh!

I too need to run down a tow eye. Had one in all of our other 944/968 cars but let the last one get away and found that this one does not have one. It will bite me one day.

As far as the heater control valve you may want to go metal or crimped metal/plastic.

Is that the rare 24 ct gold plated unit that is in the Neiman Marcus Christmas catalog?

A friendly 928 owner helped me out with the tow eye (steel, not gold, but I used it anyway). Bless him and his complete tool kit.

That is an Audi heater control valve, and works perfectly in our cars. Part # 74671, made by "Four Seasons"

And then google "audi heater control valve porsche 968" and you'll see a listing that says "Guide: Audi Heater Control Valve" on rennylist for the instructions.

Edit: the picture bandit posted is slightly different, but the one I linked is the correct part #.

not quite "perfectly"

the vacuum fitting is a different size, and must be adapted.

also, the amount of pull required to open it is different, which may or may not affect the heater.

it does not, however have the design flaw of the glue, which ultimately may make it work better in the long run.

Had my metal (Audi) for nine plus years zero problems - yes I had to use a little JB weld to make bulge to help seal the vacume line but wasn't hard and has held up - and I get plenty of heat when I want it...

Flash! We need D1R to design one more product. The HCV instant repair kit, it would be a bypass, or maybe just a couple of plugs, complete with clamps and use-once $0.10 tools to install. Or maybe just gobs of underwater epoxy to smear all over the old part as temporary. Of course 3 bottles of Evian would be included to refill. Then we can carry this in our glove box along with the DME relay.

Only $19.99 ---- but wait ---- order now and we'll include this instant oil pickup tube repair kit (just add shipping and handling of $9.68)

Yeah, like ya'll I towed home once from the HCV, luckily car came with the tow hook.

I've installed these T-shaped valves and more often the Four Seasons 74671 Heater Valve and all I have ever had to do is add a twist of wire or a ziptie to the vacuum line. I have never run one for 20 years but so far so good and my impression is that they won't fail catastrophically. Unless your OEM style unit is quite new I recommend replacing it when practicable to avoid an unexpected breakdown.

If your vacuum line is too stiff to fit well this way, replace the whole line or the fitting. The vacuum nipple could also probably be swaged out or expanded with some heat shrink but honestly I have not had to do this.

BTW I found a great source of bulk silicone vacuum line in the fish aisle at Petsmart. Six bucks for a lifetime supply for several cars. It has worked fine for me for over a year.
