When does the 968 hit the "speed wall?"
#1

In my 928S 32V ('85) I can get to 147mph really quick in 4th gear but when I shift into 5th...it's like I hit a brick wall. The car actually seems to quit accellerating...then very slowly works its way up to 155mph...but it takes a long, long track....

Does the 968 have a "wall"? I've not tried it on the track yet.

BTW, other years of 928s have different speeds at which they "hit the wall" all related to gearing and horsepower. For me, in the 928, it's clearly at the top end of 4th gear. It's one heck of a ride till then though. I wish it were as reliable as the 968.

I haven't actually tried reaching top speed, but the acceleration curve always felt pretty steady to me. Only once was I in the upper end of 5th gear, and it surprised me how the car pulled when I gave it more gas. I guess that's the difference between a 5 speed and a 6 speed gear box, the close ratios.

I've yet to enter 6th gear in a sprint. Ive never mae it out of 5th. I can say that when I got off the throttle I was at 145 and still pulling hard! mind you Porsche has acheived great advancements w/ Variocam by 92.

I was in the market for a 928 for a while. I was focused on a powerful NA Porsche and was a bit taken back when I discovered that the 8 cylinder prior to 1987 produced such low HP The 4.5L made around 220HP I couldn't understand how the V8 produced the same power as their I4. Around 88 was the year to buy IMO as they pushed pass 300HP and had a DOHC instead of a single.

But now that I own a Porsche I wish I drove that 85 928 for sale in my area. I've come to realize that Porsche doesnt make a slow car and I've heard the experience of a 928 is truly something special.

However I also heard that you have to be rich to maintain a 928. i believe the cost per year was quoted to me at around 7 grand.

although one can categorize the acceleration as consistent, well sustained all the way up to the car's max. speed capability ( and yes, I've been there more times than I care to admit in print ), you do feel a little difference in how it pulls once you're in 6th gear, but I would not categorize it to be a "wall" as experienced in many other cars..there is no material drop in power.

I can vouch for Dan's credibility on this one.

honestly officer, it's all about speedometer error with these cars ! sure, it may show that I was going 160, but the car is really only doing 65

Heh, of course you could always say "What? 150? I was sure I was doing at least 180. I'll have to look into it"

Anyone else get a "bouncing" speedo needle after about 75 mph? How do I fix this? It's kind of annoying. Tach is fine and I look for revs at track out anyway... but it would be nice to know just how fast I'm going barrelling into a turn in 5th gear
