Computer Error codes
#1

On new cars under the dash there is a connector to plug a hand held device that can give you a series of codes to determine if something is amiss with you vehicle. Did the 968 have such a plug on it. If so which hand held device do you all have. I would like to get one that possible could be used on my KIA Sedona as well.

Our cars are OBD-1. New cars are OBD-2. The connectors and software are different. I believe that there is a company (their name is listed here on this site, I think that it is Durametric) that makes a system, complete with software, that works on both systems on a laptop. When our cars were new the dealers used something called a Bosch hammer. I expect that few shops have one.

Some codes can be read by the "blink test", which is described on this site, if you have a US car with a "check engine" light. I used it yesterday to determine that I need a new Hall sender.

You can build a board if you are handy to read/reset codes. I have done so, that parts are about 20.00 and the software is gratis. Once you meet the dreaded "!" airbag light you will be spurred on

Dave,

After relacing my steering wheel with a MOMO Competion wheel and removing the airbag (3 ohm resistor added) I`m having to continuously have my airbag light reset with the dealer`s "Hammer". I need help. Can you assist with advice as to where I can obtain the board specification, build instructions and any other advice that might assist?

I have tried to obtain/purchase one of these boards before without success so any help will be greatly appreciated.

I went to Goggle and entered the following "Bosch Hammer" electronic diagnostics tool for Porsche and there was a link to Pelicanparts..........The infamous Bosch Hammer (aka KTS301) at work (long with pics ...‎ - Jun 17, 2006

It was an interesting article. After reading this I am now looking at the Durametric unit. But as I do not own a laptop this may be a little expensive. I have a friend who owns a computer repair shop. Perhaps there is a used laptop for sale.

I went to Napa and saw a unit made by a company called Innova. I called them another dead end as their units do not work on 1995 or earlier 968's 944 etc.

Durametric software + Laptop, is still cheaper than a Bosch hammer, and, in the right hands, more useful too.

Baz, it is wierd that your airbag light keeps coming on. When i swapped my Steering wheel for a Club Sport Wheel, my light came on as well. installed the resistor and re set the light...hasnt come on since. This was done about 1.5 years ago.

Yes it `s a bit frustrating as the car can be parked at the end of the day without the warning light on and when started the next morning bingo!

The car sit on a battery charger when not being used and I have often wondered whether this connection could cause a power spike. It is only a 900MA unit so you wouldn`t think so. Have you had cause to disconnect your battery over the 1.5 year period?

The light is on now so I think I`ll go back to square one, check out the wiring and replace the resistor and have it reset but again.

It`s good to hear it should work.

Given my ongoing battle with the air bag warning light I wonder if you could kindly assist by providing me with details of the board/software you have built and how it is used so at least I could reset it myself rather than have the local Porsche Dealer welcome me with "Shall we need the Hammer today Sir?"

I have a copy of a schematic (Rev.2.1 dated May 27, 2004) for a board interface with a ScanTooL but frankly have no idea if this is what is required nor will it work.

Any help to assist the uninformed would be appreciated.

baz, The battery has not been disconected, but has died from sitting over the winter. I used a trickle charger to charge it back up and started the car right up.

Fox944,

Thanks for your input. I`ll just keep chipping away at this until I find the fix. All part of the 968 experience.

Just a quick aside and I`m sure you have already been asked is that a AIR rear spoiler on your car ? Looks good.

Baz, maybe you read this topic http://www.968forums.com/index.php?showtopic=3684 it gives the answers to most of your questions about the circuitboard.

Baz, sorry for late reply but I'm out of town working right now. I can help you with guidance in building the board and use of the software if you wish. I have all the docs and a few helpfull URL's that explain the process of use in detail.
A .9 Amp charger certainly shouldn't create such a surge as to trigger your light. I don't know the internal resistance of the airbag but maybe whoever came up with 3 ohms was a little off and you have a picky DME?

DaveN,

When you have time your advice will be appreciated. In the mean time I`m going to change the resistor and check the wiring.

Again thanks for the offer of help.

If you do have your airbag out try to measure the resistance with a good DVM like Fluke. Resistances this low require a quality meter and the resistor may have to be milspec or at least a 5% tolerance.

Thanks for the topic reference this has cleared the fog.

I`ll be taking the system down this weekend and I will try to ensure the resistance is correctly established.

At this point I think I have the process worked out but the challenge seems to be building or obtaining the "Andy Witthakey" interface.
If you have a schematic of this interface that I can use to build one or know of one not being used this information would be appreciated.

Thanks for your help.
