pre-mature windhield washing
#1

My driver's side washer nozzle leaks fluid onto the hood under medium-hard accelleration. I thought maybe a check valve, but that is supposed to keep the fluid from leaking back into the tank rather than out onto the hood, yes?

I've found lots of cars have problems with the washers not working, but mine work fine. It's really bad to get out of a clean car and see washer fluid on the hood. Can't be good for the paint. This happens even if I don't use the washers for a month, and I haven't filled the tank for 6 months, so it shouldn't be overfilled. In fact I think the tank is cracked and unable to be topped off.

Maybe that's it, cracked tank letting air into the system from behind???? Seems improbable that it would push by the pump.

Maybe a leak in the line after, no wait, before the check valve??? But they work fine...

It's just like there's a shot glass full of fluid right under the nozzle that sloshes out. So bizzare that I was sure I'd find it a common problem on the threads, but no luck.

Any ideas?

Thanks so much,

Rich

There has been prior discussion of similar issues. For example, when I hit a sharp bump, the driver's side washer nozzle will squirt fluid - sometimes with enough energy to hit the windshield, but always with enough to dribble onto the hood. Washer fluid tank level seems to have nothing to do with this, so I've learned to live with it. As a future project, I'm thinking about modifying the washers so that the nozzles are mounted on the wiper arms, thereby eliminating the hood-mounted nozzles and getting a better wash. Ford has this (maybe others as well) and it's pretty effective.

it is the check valve - drove me nuts - even my neighbor was giving me grief about it

i just changed mine for exactly that reason - 3 bucks - all fixed now - no more spooey on my hood

Nice. Thanks! Not a lot of 3$ problems with these cars. I appreciate your responses.
