Clunking on reverse
#1

This has started to worry me somewhat, when reversing from my sloped driveway, as I turn the wheel into a full lock to avoid the car parked across the opposite side of the road, I get a very loud CLUNK CLUNK, and it feels as if the front wheels are 'jumping off the roadway'!, its a very loud noise, and at first I thought the tyres were catching on the wheel arch inner covers!, but they do clear the body work, so it cant be that!.

It only does it when the car is on a slope, of any gradient, and there is no sound or kangaroo effects when the car is on the level. Any Ideas?

i have a suspicion - how's the tire wear pattern? does the car wander at all?

Tires are OK, had new Koni shocks fitted all round recently, and then had tracking checked and balanced, car drives rock steady, no wandering at speed (hands off wheel) but its a nasty mech type noise

well, a ball joint may be going or gone, but you should hear noise going forward too

a sway bar bushing will make a racket, and you won't hear it going down the road so much, but you should hear that on bumpy roads at low speed

a lower control arm bushing or castor block could do it, but you should see some feathering on the tires, and have some wander or tramlining

Thanks Flash I had been toying with the Idea of replacing all of the bushes, and rubber items with 'polyflex' items, I already have a pair of replacement ball joints, so I may take the plunge and do the lot.

beware of polyurethane - it is generally very noisy stuff - i have installed elephant racing spherical bearings almost everywhere and have enjoyed a very positive feel and no noise - the company has a great reputation

the front control arm bushings are a bear to change no matter which way you go

i have heard a rumor that there is now a replacement ball joint, but have not been able to confirm it - the last time i checked the only way to replace ours was to replace the control arm - the replaceable ball joints were for the 951 control arms, which we do not have, and do not work on our control arms

The pn's for the '87 control arms are exactly the same as for the 968...except for the '87 M030 which are a different animal.
I recently bought some control arms at a decent price to refurbish and to have a spare set. they were from an '87 951.
plan on polishing them up, make them purty.

PET is wrong

there are 2 part numbers for the 87 left: 951.341.027.02 and 944.341.027.02 (ABS and non-ABS)

while PET shows the same number for the 968, the part number for the 968 left is actually 944.341.149.02

not the same (right arms are also different)

the 968 ball joint is machined and pressed in - the others come out with a circlip

there is a company in florida that does the 968 arms, but it is about $250 each

no worries - i have not found an updated catalog - there are a few errors in the PET though, so don't feel bad - we've all gotten the "right" part but have it still be wrong

but the problem could be a ball joint, so this may still be of service to sstman

Thanks for the assistance guys, will be able to have a good look underneath the car later this week, as I've just had a bit of good luck on E-bay, and 'won' some nice 'clean' 17" wheels with good tread tyres too!, so anyone interested in a set of original 16" 968 Cup wheels?

Give the castor blocks a thourouh inspection, I had a similar problem a few years ago.
Look for small cracks in the rubber.
Also try prying with a screw driver to see if there is any movement in all the components.

I have recently developed the exact same problem, only in reverse, at full lock, about 1 knock and steering feels like it jumps....this happens after about a full rotation of the wheel. Has there been any more developments or info on this problem? I replaced the caster blocks in July so I know its not them. I plan on crawling under and having a look but some advise on what to look for would be great!

Thanks in advance!

I've just experienced exactly the same symptoms that are set out in this post. Last Sunday, for the first time, when putting the baby to bed; full left lock, [ie left hand down] in reverse and the left wheel seems to skip or judder as it turns. When I grabbed the left front wheel, at the top, still at full lock, and gave it a bit of a shake there seemed to be a very small amount of play that I had not noticed before. No previous problems and the car is otherwise fine

.

As the last post on this was about 14 months ago can anyone tell me what you found when you delved further into the cause???
